Something is broken under my steering wheel

Whats's wrong with the steering wheel? It's a BMW X3 steering wheel (F25).

You won't know for sure, until the airbag cover comes off.....but it looks to me like someone has pounded the steering wheel in fury, and broken the wheel's basic plastic structure. There is, of course, a metal structure, but I doubt there will be any way to fix what's broken in the photo. Is the car still under warranty?

Thanks for your reply. Yes the car's warranty has expired. It's a used car and I have just recognised this fault.
