2001 E38 Six speed swap question

I'm currently swapping my 2001 740i to a manual. I'm wondering if anyone knows what needs to be done with the reverse switch on the transmission? Do I need to find a pigtail and wire it into something? I just checked the parts list and I didn't notice anything concerning the switch.

Quick and dirty engine start wiring – take the Automatic Transmission range switch (connector X8532) and using a method of your choice, join wires from pins 1,2,4 and 5 together. You have now hard wired the car to think the auto transmission is in park. Car will now start.
->CEL and TFS, so that might be an issue in your county

    Reverse Circuit
On the IKE take pin 13 out of connector X10113 change the end and put it in pin 25 on connector X10114. This wire is the transmission position indicator. It comes out of the AGS connector X8600 on pin 25 and goes to X21, one of the in-line engine connector in the e-box. It comes into X21 in location 5 as the pin part. The socket part is the wire that runs to the IKE. Now to make this wire the reverse signal, take the socket wire out of X21 at location 5 and put it into the socket part of in-line connector X69 (also in e-box) at location 21 (back up light signal). Then take pin 1 from connector X8524 on the reverse switch S8524 and put it in the pin part of location 21 on X69. Pin 2 from X8524 goes to ground at connector X6458. You now have the reverse circuit done and in the proper connector locations for future reference. This circuit will not be active until the ZCS code is changed. Once that is done the IKE will provide the signal to the LCM etc. that reverse gear has been selected.

Thanks for the quick response. Is there a resource to find where each of these connectors are located? I'm still confused about the actual connection to the reverse light switch on the six speed. Don't I need a pigtail to connect to the switch to activate the reverse lights?

Proper reverse needs to be coded in. How you get them spliced is a an answer of the imagination.

I guess it's time to pull out the wiring diagram and decipher the mess.

CDH's FAQ is primarily for preface cars.
    Read through mine. https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...ed-swap-coding
once the ground signal is connected to the cluster and the cluster's setting is changed from automatic the manual the reverse lights will work.

I bought this harness it fits the reverse light switch. Does anybody know how much the driveshaft needs to be shortened? My car is a 740i shorty.IMG_20170608_165551356.jpg

Thanks for the reply. I looked at the stock lengths and the automatic is 1538mm long and the manual is 1689mm long. Are these the wrong specs, or are they for an older 740?

Another question, which barb did you connect the hydraulic hose to on the brake fluid reservoir? The upper is barb on the driver's side is larger in diameter than the lower one.

I'll check it out tomorrow, thanks. I'm in Wisconsin and I am looking for someone to help with recoding the car. Until I find someone to do this I plan on driving the car by doing the combine the wires trick. I would like to run the wires for the clutch switch and reverse switch while I have everything apart. Will I be able to do this or will the car not start after doing this?

Until you can flash the DME to a manual program the trans computer has to stay connected. So you have to do the wire twist. Of course you can go ahead and repurpose the range switch harness for the reverse switch and just do the wire twist right at the trans computer plug. You can also go ahead repurpose the 2 L2 wires like my thread suggests you'll just have to supply switched 12v to the EWS pin-6. The reverse lights still will not work until the cluster setting is changed to manual.

yep, and if the programming is done while the cars down the EWS startlock can be turned off. (one less splice that needs to be done)
You have the modded files don't you?

"Today I decided to go back into the wiring and change a few things. Learned a few things....
My reverse signal was just run up into the console then up to the IKE. I used the old range switch wire to get the reverse switch up to the DME. One wire goes to ground and the other goes to DME X60002 pin 2. Then out of DME X60004 pin19, that goes to IKE X10114 pin25. I wanted to repurpose the factory wiring by using Craigs suggestions, But I found out that my car does not have a gear indicator wire going between AGS and IKE. So I used the wire from pin18 on X70003. that goes to the shifter area, then had to extend it up the IKE. The gear info on a 99+ must come through the Bus system.
Next change was a better clutch signal.
I repurposed the old L2 wire from pin8 on the EWS ,this goes to the starter relay which has already been cut at the relay. Connect to pin23 on DME X60004.
Also found out that the EWS doesn't need any L2 power
In the trace file for the EWS the setting "PARK/NEUTRAL_EINGANG" is "nicht_aktiv" which is why I'm guessing the L2 is not needed."
Is this what you are referring to for the reverse wiring?

Yep, that way you do not have to run any new wires through the dash.

Can I also wire in the clutch switch or do I need to wait to re-code the car. Yesterday I was able to mount the new master cylinder and attach the hose to the brake reservoir, it actually pressed on easily after I lubed up the hose.

Today I modified the E39 transmission mount. All I had to do was elongate the holes for the bolts to the body. i also installed all the shifter components. That E60 shifter feels nice!
