2006 550i e60 transmission is acting up. Can anyone give advice on should i rebuild the entire transmission or rebuild valve body and change fluid. The car has 93,000 miles. also i live in Atlanta,Ga if anyone knows any good indy shops or mechanics that can do the job at reasonable price. email me : t77bone@gmail.com
Several threads on this issue, wiht good details.
I think a mechatronic valve body rebuild and solenoid cleaning will fix it. Maybe even just the solenoid cleaning, but you can get rebuilt valve bodies for around $1200.

Before you do that have a shop check the adaption numbers for the clutches, if the over 350, the the trans could have internal wear issues. The most common shifting repairs are the pressure seals between the valve body and the transmission cast.
Even if you wind up having to rebuild the transmission, you will still have to do the solenoids and valve body, and the rubber bits. So start there and hope that this solves the issue.
In my case, it turned out that a c-clip holding a drum inside the transmission had come off and the drum had 'spun out of control' damaging itself. This is such a rare occurrence that the transmission expert thinks that there must have been work done on the tranny previously and not put together properly. We're trying to source a good used part to complete the rebuild. While in there, we're doing the bearings and clutches.

Thanks alot i got the valve body rebuilded flushed cooling line..new filter and new trans fluid. Runs like a new BMW. There were no metal pieces in the pan. Nor was the oil burnt smelling. So i caught it in time before any hardware damage to the trans. So im assuming that the solution to most of the zf trans jerking problems is not to drive it and get it fix asap it will save you lots of money. With no doubt if continued to drive it with the jerking i would have definitely needed a new or rebuilt trans.
So this adaptation number for the clutches is a rough estimate of wear of the clutches? Can this be read with INPA? I am about to do the solenoids in my car but the part I am looking forward to the least is figuring out how to install and use INPA just to reset the adaptations. I have read some threads on installing the software and it seems very complicated.

I am having the same issues and afraid that I need to do the Solenoid replacement and VB repair kit. Hard 1-2 and 2-3 shift. Especially bad in sport mode. Also, after driving for 5-10 minutes, if I put in gear selector in reverse I get a very hard engage and lurch. I have to place in "N" briefly, then go to reverse to make sure I don't get the hard engage and lurch. I am in the Milwaukee area, does anyone know of a good Indy shop I can take my car to check the Clutch Adaptation numbers?
