I don't drive this car much, a couple of weeks ago I noticed that the shifter felt sticky/gummy. Yesterday I took it out to get it washed and everything was fine, I drove it around to put some time on it when I got home I went to move the shifter from drive to park and it was locked up, it won't come out of the drive position. The shifter handle pin release is coming up but doesn't move to any other position, I turned the engine off and now I can't remove the key, start the engine, etc. Luckily I had pulled into the shop, I didn't feel like messing with last night, after the holiday I'll lift it up and disconnect the linkage at the transmission and determine if it's shifter or transmission related. I thought I'd ask if anyone has had this problem. Thanks
Most likely the linkage. Mine was very sloppy also. I had to adjust it. You may need to replace the bushings if you can't shift at all.
Check engine light (CEL) means 'Cost Estimate Large'
I've spent most of my money on this car the rest I just pissed away
If the shifter cannot be moved: Not only the cable can be the problem, I assume you might soon need a new part for the transmission, quite often that it breaks, that is a typical symptom that the selector valve is the problem, that material expands/swells slightly with age. But that is a cheap part and easy to replace, a bit more than a trans filter change.
The selector valve inside the valve body was originally made out of a kind of plastic/resin, that breaks on many transmissions, so you have the feeling first that shifting is hard and then you can shift and shift and nothing happens, this part is now made of different material, example http://www.thectsc.com/products/sele...alve-84-3.html Product ID : 1056 327 173 01 selector valve
4 cases I know of within last month, 1 x on an E32 730 M60B30 with 5HP18, another one on an E36 M3 with 5HP18, and one case on an E34 with a 5HP18 and another one on a E36 with 5HP18.
That part is included in every valve body overhault kit.
To replace that part you have to remove the transmission oil pan, the trans filter, then losen the valve body and drop it a bit and then you can change that part. No need to disassemble the valve body.

Shogun tricks and tips for the E32 series are HERE!
Thanks for the replies. The other night when it was locked up I disconnected the battery and left. Last night I was going to disconnect the linkage fro the transmission, before doing that I tried the shifter and it seemed fine, I placed it in park and removed the key, reconnected the battery, started the car and everything was fine. Tonight I'll take it for a drive and see. In the mean time I'll do as Shogun suggested and buy the parts to have them on hand. The question is do I buy only the selector valve or the overhaul kit? Thanks
Another question for Shogun. Is the selector valve you recommended also used in the A5S560Z transmission? Thanks
FWIW I had shifter linkage issues annnd it turned out to first be a SCREW dropped inside from within the interior blocking the locking pin, and a second time just . . . crap in the way. Take out the center console and take a peak in there first =) Free $$

Does anyone know the correct BMW OEM part number that crosses over to the ZF number 1056 327 173 or 1056 327 173 01. I found the correct part numbers for the "O" rings that seal the valve body to the upper part of the transmission. Thanks
