I dont know shit about cars man.

The valve was leaking air from the leakdown test.

He couldnt track down the coolant leak and said that the headgasket is fine.

I don't like your mechanic, get a second opinion.

I think that's a good idea as well.

I drove the car home from the mechanic yesterday. The temp gauge creeped up to the 2nd tick line.
He said he ran it for an hour with AC on full blast and the temp gauge was stable.

Now he's suggesting it could be the temp gauge sensor or a clogged heater core?
I can do the sensor myself. But a clogged heater core? Is this even possible?

It probably required a load on the engine to overheat it. Just idling obviously didn't find the problem.

It's easy for someone to say, 'go get a new mechanic' but there is time and money involved there too. There could just be a communication barrier or vocabulary lesson that would get you on track with what your mechanic is doing and saying. Either way, you'll want to keep investigating.

If you can buy a Corolla and put this in a garage, you've bought yourself some time to decide what to do. Once you find the problem, then research the fix yourself. If you DIY, it won't be horribly expensive.
