Has anyone driven with no thermostat? Can it work? Ive been trying to identify the overheating problem.

You will have issues warming up and maintain operating temp, but should run fine.
If you're trying to test the thermostat, put it in boiling water and watch it open. Should give you a good idea of how it's working.

Same condition as with a broken, always open t-stat = engine does not come to operating temperature = more engine wear on the long run, more fuel consumption, but basically it is possible.
Shogun tricks and tips for the E32 series are HERE!
You can pull the thermostat to test it, but not to solve a overheating problem. You should start with replacing the water pump.
Just install a new thermostat. It isn't worth the trouble to take it out and then put the tstat housing back on without it and then have to take it back off a second time to put a new one in.

When i installwd the radiator I didnt install the fan right away so i assumed that was the problem just because it was creeping to overheat ing and the gauge would fall back down a couple of time before red lining.
So thanks for advive and opinions.
