Need some advice.....I changed fuel filter on my 1991 325ix and now it won't start. It sputters briefly so some fuel is flowing (removed the new filter and it is full of fuel). I put the old filter back on and same thing so it's not the new filter. Thinking that the fuel pump went bad but would a small amount of fuel still flow? I disconnected the intake of the filter and turned the ignition to position 2 but no fuel flowed. What is the quickest way to test the pump?
You can crank the car with a fuel hose disconnected into a bucket to test the pump. The pump only runs if cranking or if the car is running.
You sure you aren't installing the filters backwards?

I disconnected the output of the filter. When I cranked the engine fuel steadily flowed. Is there air that I need to bleed at the engine?
I also changed cap, rotor and plug wires at same time.....just in case that was the issue I put the original cap, rotor and wires back on but had same problem. Car very briefly starts but then dies. If I try to accelerate when starting is stays running a little longer but sputters the whole time then goes into this high rpm mode and shuts down.
It ran fine before the fuel filter? If so, just check everything you touched while doing your work. Obviously something didn't go back together quite right, so you just need to find what that is. If it wasn't running correctly before, then we have to follow a different process.

Are you sure the cylinder sensor connector is fully seated/no bent pins?
