Hi all, 2001 325i auto. 199k miles.
The PO did not put a lock on the trunk lid. I've been opening my trunk with the fob. All of a sudden the fob won't open the trunk. The car does not have the manual switch to open the trunk. Is there any other way to open the trunk? I want to replace the battery but can't open the trunk.
Any ideas on how to open the trunk? I have access to the inside of the trunk from the middle of the back seat. The arm rest that folds down has material that is velcroed to the back wall. I can pull down the material and see inside the trunk but the space is too small for me to crawl in there.
Many advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
No. The car was in an accident a couple of POs ago and the trunk lid was replaced but, they never put a lock in the hole. I've been opening the trunk with the fob since I've owned the car. Now the fob won't unlock the trunk. I replaced the fob battery also.

Are you saying that there is a hole where the lock cylinder should be? I happen to have an '01 325i and I just went and had a look in the trunk. Dang, there is no emergency lock release or anything. When I insert the key into the cylinder to unlock the trunk, it does feel like there is something mechanical going on to release the trunk lid, meaning that I don't think there is an actuator involved, although I could be wrong.
Things like this happening is exactly the reason I keep a cheapie fiber optic camera around. If you can, have a look into the hole. There should be some sort of linkage in there.
That is correct. There is no cylinder in the hole. There is a rubber grommet covering the hole. I can put my finger in the hole but, can't feel anything mechanical. The PO didn't take the cylinder from the original trunk lid and installed it on the new trunk lid. Does my model have the option to install a manual trunk release button under the dash above the hood release? I've read some models have the trunk release option and some don't.
Shoot, my son just left with the car, but if I recall, turning the key to the left opens the trunk which would lead me to believe that there is linkage that must be pulled to the right. Do you have any sort of magnetic apparatus that you might be able to drop in there to see if you can capture the linkage?
I don't think I have a magnet strong enough. I haven't tried turning the key to the left on the driver's door. I'll try that.
You might have to get creative with a screw driver or something and see if you can catch it. Being that it ties into the lock cylinder some how, the end of it should be bent in a way that you might be able to get a hold of it with a screw driver maybe....
Dumb question tho, why are you replacing the battery? Is it dead?
