M50 OBD1 head on S52 block - Temp Sensor Question

    Hi All,

I am swapping my cracked S52 head for a built M50 head. The only problem is this head is OBD1, and I know if has a different number of temp sensors (and coolant passages?). I am looking for advice on how to "plug" this temp sensor. Any guidance on what I need to do or buy is appreciated.

P.S. This project has been stalled for several years so please excuse any errors in the above statement.

    Thank you!

If you're looking to just block the sensor hole, the threads are M12x1.5. You can find a plug (or bolt) in that thread and put a crush washer on it, done.

That being said, I don't know if the newer temp sensors fit in the M50 head, or even if the M50 head will fit on an S52. My only input is on the thread size.

Use a hex socket cap screw like the oem ones found elsewhere on the engine.

Be smart and get an after market temp gauge. Use the extra hole to your advantage.

Either add a water temp gauge sender or use an oil drain plug with a new crush washer. That will be better than a bolt or socket head cap screw which are not designed to center the crush washer. The OE drain plug is m12x1.5. Check though because the sensor ports might be m14x1.5, the only one I know for sure is m12 is the nipple for the TB heater hose connection.

If you're looking for an aftermarket temp gauge, I just installed this one: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/VDO-A2C59517248S

Works perfectly. Make sure to get a matching 250F gauge. VDO sells one other water temp gauge with the same thread- that is a 300F sender and won't work.
