    P0340 1998 m3

    Hi All,
I know there are a lot of other posts about this but I feel that mine is a bit more specific.

I have the code and I know that it typically means that the car should have long crank times and run rough and stall but mine only seems to run rough for about 1min upon start up and the levels out nicely. I would also like to add that when the CEL first came on I had 2 p0340 codes. Then after a bit the CEL went off and the reader was giving me only 1 code for an Error. I bought a aftermarket CPS(I know now they are not a good idea) and put it in and the CEL came back on and gave me both codes along with the fact that the car has noticeably slower acceleration. I heard that there are 2 sensors. One for Intake(which is what I replaced) and one for exhaust. I have also heard that this is wrong and my Bentley Manual doesnt mention it that I can see..

    So..My questions are:
-Any tips on this(Besides what the other forums have said i.e. (Spark Plugs, Wiring Harness, Wiring, Etc.)
    -Are there 2 Sensors?
-If so How do I replace the exhaust one?

    Thanks In Advance!

Put a BMW sensor in. There is only one for the single vanos cars.

You can't accurately diagnose your car using P-codes; these are nonsense government bureaucrat mistranslations of what's actually wrong with your car.

You have single vanos; therefore only 1 cam sensor.

That's 1 BAD cam sensor, if you bought anything other than an OEM or OE part from a BMW specialist supplier.

But hey, let's look at what you've got: a generic code that says "Cam sensor CIRCUIT" You know "circuit" involves the wires, plug, voltage, ground, etc?

Try peeling back the rubber boot, on the engine side of the plug, for that sensor......anything left of the wires, or are they melted?

EDIT: Dammit, Abel, you beat me again....obviously, I am slow typing. Hell, at least I drive fast....

    1999 BMW 323is
Hello! I have just registered on this forum and would like to ask two questions about my 1999 BMW 323is. I'm getting a P0340 and P0340-P code readings, and the car runs pretty smooth. My questions are:

    1. Should I go ahead and replace the camshaft position sensor, anyway?
    2. What brand is better between the two, VDO or Siemens?

I will appreciate any input you guys can provide.
