I installed eBay coilovers this weekend. Everything bolted on fine but I couldn't figure out how to use the cone hats in the picture below. I reused OEM strut mounts and I thought that maybe the hats sit above them but no they don't fit. What are they for?
The don't have any other mounting points. Also what are the smaller helper springs for? I also did not use them.
Thanks in advance
The top of the cone sits against the bearing in the top mount.
You'll need to remove the dampening adjustment knob and remove the nut that holds it on, then secure it once it's passed through the top. I know mine has different to standard tops because the way the coilovers fit is very different to the way the swivel of the OEM struts is set up. The OEM swivelled using a bearing the fitted directly against the spring, whereas the coilovers required a bearing in the mount.

I see. So you are saying that the cone sites below the rubber mount. I thought about it and it looked like entire force would be on the bearings and didn't seem right. I installed it like in this picture.
Doing little more digging looks like coaxial cone is there to limit spring movement. Looks like I gotta redo my setup
From the looks you'll probably have to compress the springs since there isn't a lot of shaft to grab there at the top. While you're at it get some eBay camber plates and some step sleeve bearings, you'll be happier with the result

Compressors are rarely necessary with coilovers as you can simply wind the spring seat down and completely remove any pressure.

Agreed but with helper springs in the photos and where the lower sleeve is, doesn't look like that set will go further down. I wouldn't have piped in had the photo not been posted.
