    bad diagnostic reading

My BMX 2004 X-5 started "limping" and surging all of sudden and the panel reading said, "failsafe Prog". Took it to my mechanic and he said the car has bad nine bad diagnostic readings and I'm looking at 10K to repair and he said, get rid of it. Well, I'm skeptical, and I really don't want to give up on this car. Any advice out there? Can these bad diagnostics be fixed one at a time. 10K is out of the ball park for me.

A printout of those 9 bad diagnostic readings, would be really helpful right about now.
