    Help with mysterious hose

Hi all! I'm restoring an '87 735i and I can't figure out where this hose should attach. I'm quite familiar with E34's but it doesn't have this hose that comes from the firewall towards the front.

    comes from here

    to here

Anyone know what's the function/purpose of this hose?

    btw, VIN is 1638678

Just a guess, the super old hydraulic headlight aim adjustment control? http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=63_0068
Same system was also used on the old E30 3 series and there also it did not work very well, they are talking about a switch at the knee bolster https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...ustment-System

Thanks for those leads Shogun! I've seen the level adjusters connected to the lower control arms (#3 on the realoem diagram you linked). I haven't figured out yet how they work until I've got this thing running. One thing's for sure, there's no adjuster inside the cabin. As I understand the system automatically adjust the headlight aim depending on the movement of the lower control arm. Also if the system is hydarulic it might attach to the ATF/Pentosin reservoir. I will investigate this.

also read this thread, that car also had the hydraulic headlight aim system, end 1986, he posted some parts pics of the system built year http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/1080821

Not sure if the E32 had a switch or if that was full hydraulic automatic, have never seen such system in operation.

    way too many
Early e28's had a vacuum hose under the dash that passed thru the firewall and attached to the intake manifold. It's purpose was to draw a token amount of cabin air past a temp sensor under the dash to help regulate HVAC temps.

Updating this thread with pics of the hydraulic headlight aiming system.

There's a linkage attached to the lower control arm to detect pitch or dive of the suspension. I guess that thing that the linkage attaches to is some kind of leveller. There two plastic hoses attached to the leveller one goes to the rear and the other goes to the front. There is nothing inside the hoses. It's dry.

I removed the wheel well liner and saw this. Some kind of distribution block. Again empty, dry.

I've actually deleted this feature as I've cut the hose going to the headlight which had some kind of automatic adjuster.

Wow, I never heard of this. What a weird setup. My new vehicle controls headlight pitch also when braking hard or accelerating quick, but its all electronic.

That is a pretty cool and bizarre feature! How do you adjust the headlights manually?

I just replaced it with regular screw type adjuster.

best you could do, that system never worked on the long run, cracked and air came in etc., many E30 drivers converted that system in Germany with the electric aim motors from Ford Fiesta, they need a functioning headlight aim system to pass the bi-annual TUV inspection

here a typical ready to install set with wiring http://www.lwr-shop.de/umrustkit-zur...r-bmw-e30-lwr/

here a DIY for conversion to Ford Fieasta electric system http://wp1016621.server-he.de/fotost/f01214/f01214.htm

Seems to be a good business in Germany to offer these conversion sets to electric aim for many brands, there is even one shop which only sells these conversion kits

here someone repaired the old system, in the hoses of the system is not hydraulic fluid, it is glycol http://wp1016621.server-he.de/fotost/f01538/f01538.htm

Similar to E24 too I assume.
Here the version with heater only, there are inside the cabin on the EURO E32 model http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E3...rts_for_heater
3 Temperature sensor passenger room 64111384253
    4 Vacuum hose black 11727545323 3,5X1,8
    4 Vacuum hose white 64111368684 2X4

and that goes thru the firewall and is connected to the check valve between air intake and vacuum operated brake booster.
In case that hose is not connected to the check valve, then the temperature regulation inside the car (version without aircon) should be very slow respectively not operating correct. The temp sensor is located passenger side LHD behind the cover in legroom

I've reuploaded the images on my first post. Because photobucket.

Anyway I think it has been established in this thread that this hose is the fuel return line from the pressure regulator.
