sooooo
99 z3 coupe.
used ac a bit today, and noticed at idle especially, the temp needle climbing to red.
on road driving she cooled off a bit
then turned ac off....
and still at idle/stop light , she climbed to hottish again
Ill check coolant level
Ill do a fan clutch test
I guess Ill need to consider a bad water pump?...t stat?...
what else?...
in 18 yrs my temp needle liked never ever moved!!!!!!
There is no valid test for the fan clutch. But that doesn't matter. Even if it totally failed and crawled up to the top shelf in the barn to die (like mine did), you still will not overheat like that. You are low on coolant. The question is why; where did it go?

Serioiusly. With the A/C on, the electric fan is running, making the mechanical redundant. The temp should hold steady.
The last two mystery leaks I diagnosed were heater hoses.

Check heater pipes, reservoir, radiator, etc for dried coolant leaks. Check electric fan for operation. Remove clutch fan for easier inspection. I think your leak will be from components under the intake manifold because those hide more easily.
duh.....
Randy was correct
lo on coolant
duh
Uh huh.
Next question. Where did it go? You're at the mileage where the pipes under the manifold are suspect. "The consistency of stale peanut butter", as one member aptly put it. And the heater hoses. I do a 200K service on the M52TU/M54 that includes all pipes and hoses, CCV, vacuum lines, oil filter gasket and line, and what-not. It includes pulling the manifold. Not cheap. Replacing the starter at the same time is optional, but recommended.

oil filter housing gasket I assume u meant?
I know u r correct on all points...but $$$$$$$$$$
and I do appreciate your input,.........
I know she deserves it all.
I like to think of the old cooling pipe as being more like plastic imitating rust and broken dreams.
I'd top it up and drive it a bit and see how it does. The cooling system is a closed system but that's a lot of miles on that car, enough to make me think the coolant may have just disappeared. Inspect for leaks but if you don't find any, I wouldn't touch anything in the cooling system (except topping off) until you are ready to do all of the cooling system. aka if you go prodding and prying at brittle cooling hoses you may break something...
Save up and give your car the maintenance it needs though... it will thank you... and when it runs better you'll thank it too
