So new engine required. 110k and good compression numbers before it was pulled.
Always makes me happy. Cams are in great shape and zero sludge. Working on getting everything stripped so can change all the gaskets and de grease the motor. Then obd1 conversion and get this in the car.
Also finally got these both recovered and was really happy With the results.

So small update. Just been ordering parts left and right. Picking up a trans and driveshaft tomorrow then pretty much need a clutch flywheel and exhaust. Should be starting motor assembly in the next day or too. Getting really exited.

The parts are rolling in. Cleaned the engine off and all obd1 sensors are in just waiting for cooling lines and adapter and will start installing the harness. Can't wait

Never mind, I just noticed post 21 and see that you are going in a different direction now.
I did give up but it was because the m52 I got was in really bad shape and needed more work than it's worth and I got a great deal on a s52 long block. If you get the m52 cheap enough and it's in good shape it's a good deal just realize that you have to replace all the bolts that hold down the crank rods front bolt which alone comes to $420 bucks. The budget build gets expensive quick

Thank you for the heads up. This is exactly the type of info I need to determine my plan. I must be overlooking some costs because my initial overhaul parts cost estimate is only around $600 including the rings, head gasket, connecting rod bushings, bearings & bolts, main bearings & bolts, jesus bolt, head gasket and head bolts. This is all for standards spec stuff, no performance upgrades. I would want to refresh any engine I put in the car before I use it anyway so this stuff would be an expected cost for any engine I buy. I ended up buying a m52b25 for $150 so I need a crank, used rods, cams (and trays) anyway which I hope to scrounge for under $300 to have a 2.8 liter direct replacement. To get to 3 liter would probably double the cost of the project but this is the time to consider it. I really don't see myself going that route because I don't want to spend the money for performance pistons & rods (tripling the price of the project) but the displacement increase is limited in value without it.
I'm not buying any parts till I go through this engine, I know I'm likely to find it is just as bad as the m52 you bought. Fortunately my car is running fine and this is really just a contingency plan.
Thanks again for the input and I'll stop jacking your thread now.
Dude anytime and your not jacking the thread. When I started this there was barley any info on the 3.0 build so glad I can help. For sure have a machine shop check the engine first. You can get a m52b30 crank rods and pistons off ebay for under $200 bucks easily. You don't have to change cam trays for s50/s52 cams they are the same as m52 trays (only have to change them on m50 motors). Let me know any other questions you might have.
On a side note. Ac system is in. I am really being held up right now by my turner coolant sensor adapter being on galatic back order but should have some good updates soon.

Due to budget constraints went with the cheap knockoff Active system from ebay. Plan is to replace this within the next year but for the time being doesn't look terrible condition for the price

At this point goal is within the week have the car running but we shall see. Seeing the car looking like a car again is really getting me exited.

Get some Lexol leather cleaner, use warm water and a soft sponge with it. Those seats will come as clean as they will get. Then spritz them with Lexol leather conditioner until they won't take anymore.
Thats the plan. Waiting for some warm weather and will going to work.
Went TRM. They have an off the shelf chip for the mods the car has right now and works great. Depending on if I add more bolts ons may get a custom tune down the line.
Thanks man yeah its hard. I started so well than life gets nuts and all of a sudden its been built for months and you haven't updated.
Love it. For the money best option out there IMO.
Yeah it made the hole build. I have owned many e36's but never this clean makes it worth the work.

Buying a rolling chasis and perusing in it to be a race kar is going to be one of the hardest jobs you will do in life, almost everything around the engine bay is gone, wires, bolts, sensors, hoses, and having to ressemble it back to square one will most likely consume Months and Months of hard work, i say just buy a car with a blown motor that way you know everything is there then disassemble. Not saying to burst your bubble but if you want to attempt it feel free to

So just hit about 3k since the car has been running. Constantly working and changing things out as you do really working on getting the best setup. Have changed out the coil overs to Stance XR1's and extremely happy. The ride is awesome compared to the ground control and handling is amazing. Plus have the factory local is a huge bonus.

Next was wheels. Originally picked up some 17x8.5 Kosei wheels but those have since been made the track wheels as I got my hands on a mint set of 17x9.5 et35 Apex arc 8 concave's. Absolutely in love

So I have been slacking big time but a few minor updates done to the car over the last few months
Had a lady back into which sucked but gave a chance to have the entire front end re sprayed. Paint is near perfect and also went back to a period correct 95 nose

Changed out my wheel again for some staggered TRM motorsports Apex's just didn't fit right

Also some yellow high beam headlights
