Hi all,
Just joined the forums. Long time lurker. Need advice/help.
My newly acquired X3 started (2011, 20k miles, family owned) giving me problems after 1 week of driving.
-Rough idling for about a week.
-Wouldn't start yesterday
-Drivetrain Malfunction Error came up
The car cranks when I click the Start button. At times, it sounds like it's about to start but then dies. I got it towed to the stealership. They charged me $180 diagnostic fee and just recommended a complete tear down and inspection ($2100). The warranty is over. What should I do?
I've researched similar issues (fuel filter, fuel pump, fuses, etc). Has the dealership already ruled out those options?
Hello and welcome to the forum! I would go back to the dealership and get a copy of the error codes; if you're mechanically inclined, I'm sure that fellow members can give you the procedures to fix your X3. I would also consider a different dealership if they charged you money but didn't give you any information on what was wrong/found.

i'm decent with cars but unfortunately I have 0 tools since I just moved into a small apt. If i was home, I would definitely be doing some of these things myself.
Did you ever get a resolution? My car started to do the same thing today
I'm going to make a few assumptions. Car is averaging 3k a year. I would drain the fuel and filter, because it's easy and that might be a problem. Change the oil beforehand. Check all electrical connections and begin with a full change. Low voltage and BMW don't get along.

Cylinder head cover gasket makes no sense. I assume it's the valve cover gasket.
I'd also check the battery since it's been setting. Also check the ground straps under the car for corrosion.
If you go to the z3 forum and search for the diagnostic thread started by 328power04 you will find the software and links to order cables to put together a laptop to read codes and reset. Abel is very helpful with getting it setup too
