New to me 86 745i Upated!

    Hi,

I acquired a 1986 745i executive a couple of weeks ago. Well maintained by 13 year Previuos owner. Aftermarket Garret turbo with wastegate installed with 3" magnaflow exhaust and K&N type intake installed PO. So I have some learning to do regarding turbos. This is the third e23 I've owned but the first turbo.

Everything seems to work fine, but why do my directionals blink really fast? I've checked all the bulbs, all are working. Also, only one headlight works unless I turn the fog lights then both headlights come on. Hi beams work fine. I have a feeling some wiring was hacked when the car was federalized.

Oh, the wheels. Not e36 wheels. Some kind of knock off set. 17" et20 so no spacers needed.

Planning to drive it to The Vintage in NC this weekend.

    Wish me luck.

    John

Fast blink is usually a bad ground. Look forward to seeing this at Vintage.

i commented on the wheels on Facebook, they look good on the e23. Makes sense that they're aftermarket now, with the correct offset.

Car looks good, look forward to more pics.

    Thumbs up

Glad to see that car here. A few of us saw the thing on ebay.

Pictures of the upgrades would be fun to see.

Yes. Not the best eBay listing and the car was in storage so I couldn't see it. But since it was only 10 minutes away I Let the seller know I was still interested. Really clean and fast car. I'll get some pictures up in the near future.
Its ready to drive to The Vintage. New tires, refurbished Becker Mexico, fresh fluids, valve adjustment, recharged AC, and a nice hiway drive tonight has me feeling pretty good about the 1400 mile round trip to Asheville.

BTW the rapid flash was due to the wrong size (small) bulbs.

    talk to you soon,

    john

I remember seeing this on ebay. I had told the owner to list it on BaT and he ended up replying and giving me his cell phone number. Not sure how that worked out....

Glad to see someone here got it. I still have yet to see another 745i on the roads, someone a mile down the road from me has a black US spec 733i or 735i sitting in the driveway, been meaning to hop in my car and knock on the door.

    Hi,
So I’ve had my e23 745i for a year. I’m learning more about “upgrades” by the PO. This is my first turbo.
It Has an e28 fuel system wiring harness and chipped 059 ECU installed. I don’t know which chip is installed. PO can’t remember. Since it has an e28 fuel system harness does that mean it has e28 injectors? The car is running rough right now. I suspect it’s a fuel issue.
    Any performance chip recommendations?

This is the wastegate installed. Anybody recocogize the brand. My boost gauge stopped working, could the wastegate be the cause? I’m think about buying the Miller unit for sale on the forum. Is that good upgrade. Garret turbo unit is also installed in the car.

Also so has a “boost control” gauge. PO said he never adjusted it in all the years he owned the car. I’m afraid to mess with it. Any advise?

Other than what I’ve mentioned and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, the engine is completely stock.

Id like to get it running smoothly.

    Thanks,

I'd bet that the ECU has been chipped but not understanding at all why it's running on a 059 ECU- I'd pull the ECU and double check that.

That wastegate looks like a team745i unit or for sure a modified original to allow for more boost. Also looks like your magnetic valve isn't hooked up/missing a vac hose.

That knob is an internal cabin boost control, allows you to dial in more/less boost from inside the car.
I'd make sure all vac lines are hooked up correctly including rrfpr before I'd play with that boost control.

Car looks good, don't remember seeing it before

Thanks for the reply. I’m told the 059 ecu was installed to be compatible with the e28 harness.
I was wondering about that magnetic valve. As the picture shows one of the vac connections on the magnetic valve is capped the other connects to the wastegate. Where should I run a vacuum line from to the capped connection on magnetic valve? Also, should there be an electrical connection to the valve?
sorry if these are dumb questions, this turbo stuff is new to me.

I will be checking the lines to the boost gauge soon to make sure they are all intact.

    Nice looking car!
The 059 ecu isn’t much better than the factory 745 unit. It’s still on motronic 1.0, which is less than desirable for turbo applications.

Are you looking to get this running with what it has or improve it?

First step is to make sure there are zero vac leaks. Is it running the icv from the e28 as well? I imagine so. Take a shot of the engine bay and post it here. I bet you have quite a bit of hodge podge wiring and vac stuff going on.

Yes on the e28 ICV. The car ran great on a 1500 mile trip last year. Then it start running bad delivering to much fuel. But it was intermittent. Sometimes it would run fine some times really rough and stall. Also hard to start sometimes acting like it had vapor lock and barely crank. Replaced the FPR but that didn’t help. My mechanic replaced the 059 icu with a used one, swapped in the performance chip from the old one and that seemed to solve the problem. It’s running rough again but not as bad as last time.

if I’m going to replace the ICU again I would like to upgrade and also replace the injectors.
any suggestions or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some pics of the engine bay:
