I've been active on this site for a long time with my e24, but I just picked up an e23 on Friday, so I'll be spending some time searching this site for info. It's a euro 728i. It came nicely equipped for a euro, including a power sunroof, AC, cruise, power windows and a 5-speed. It came in a euro only color, Gazellnbeige with a Natural leather interior (brown). It only has '89K miles on it, and has nice original paint.
I have lots of work to do on it. As you might have guessed, there are issues with the HVAC. The auto locking feature is not working (assuming it has auto locks in all the doors, trunk and gas tank}, and the cruise doesn't work. Other than that everything else is working well.
I'm in the market for euro headlights and grills, so if anyone has any that fit the late model cars let me know. I'm also in the market for a better steering wheel, maybe a BMW Mtech wheel, or a Nardi with black spokes. If you have any of those items, PM me.
The grill and lights that are currently on the car will be for sale after I get the euro set. Also the rear bumper and rear lower valance will be for sale (I have new replacements for those already), along with the taillight lenses. If you are interested in those PM me.
The car drives great. I love the feel of the e23, something about driving a big luxury car with a manual trans that is just great experience. It is in serious need of new shocks and springs, I think it has the original set. I have new set of Bilsteins and H&R springs ready to install.

Sounds weird saying this since we were in the E24 forum for years, but welcome

Thanks Freshbread! Do you still have the 745? That was a really cool e24 that you had. Do you miss it?
I do still have the 745i. I pondered selling it after 6 months, but I enjoy it too much now.
I'll always miss the E24, but it was time

Seems I know a car with that color scheme, Gazellenbeige/Nutria leather. Very German look to that color combo. Only the E30 made it to the US in gazellenbeige

The forum software sure sucks these days with my machine. Tried to load already stored pics no dice, tried an edit nada. I'll just post another post.
Have you run the last 7 of the vin through bxixmxmxexrxixnxfxox www.bimmer.work to find out the options codes that where factory installed?

Welcome!
You need a rebuilt cruise amp to fix that issue, no big deal. An MB guy does mine for these cars. http://www.cruisecontrolrepair.com/ Many times the E23 ones become water logged and that kills the board. I highly recommend new throttle and cruise cables before testing the system. My 07/83 745i does not have factory cruise, weird!
HVAC is easy, just time consuming...you have the more simple version, you can rebuild the pods in yours for $6 each except the rear area which requires an MB part to fix for less. I have posted this info many times, a quick search with my name will help you get started on it. You could just have a broken 'T' connector at the vacuum reservoir.
Do you have the ETM for these cars? System is very simple and probably similar to your E24. You could just have an unplugged stepper motor...ask me how I know.
PS, I love your Hartge, Keith.
I make E23 parts.

Very nice, great color, love the interior. I also recently bought an 84 728, but very basic, cloth, crank windows, no ac etc.

@Bigperm206, it's a great combination. Maybe I will see your e23 or e24 at a PNW event, looks like you are in Seattle?
@8991xj I'm jealous. Love the wheels. I ran the VIN, everything matches what is on the car except it shows as having a cloth rear seat. I'm guessing that was replaced at the dealer before it left Germany. Also it had the badge delete, but the previous owner added the badge (which I like). It had something else that I can't get a clear translation on. Some people think it's clearcoat delete, but I don't think that is a real thing, but it could be undercoat delete, or no cosmoline in the engine bay.
@HitmanX I've found a few of your posts, thanks for the info. I'm doing struts/springs first, then I'll dive into the HVAC stuff. maybe next week. I'm not on any significant timeline with this project, so I can take my time. Plan to start in the engine bay to see if there are any leaks there (I hope.....). I have a brand new dash that came wit the car, so if any of the issues extend into the cabin, I'll work on them while I have the dash out.
I love all the pictures of the e23 and e24 together, I've been wanting to see this in my garage for a long time.

Clear coat delete was a real thing, I have a parts car with that and the Cosmos car was also. Rear bench in fabric is something else, code is incorrect to modern translation. Hell, we finally figured out 440 was the Executive option. My 10/84 is a badge delete too.
If dash is coming out, pull that heater box and replace the seals to the body as well as the heater core.
I make E23 parts.

Mine has clear coat delete. It's the only reason the paint looks decent. My old e34 clear coat looked horrible before I painted it.
Gazellenbeige is not a metallic so it would not have clear coat.
what are the SA codes you have questions about? The VIN decoder is using new new descriptions for old numbers and some of us know a few of the old numbers. Anything that your car does not have that is coded is suspect. Then there may be things that are options that we don't know of them as options that are coded differently. Like SA440 is a non-smoker option but on a 735/745 it is the Executive option.
So what you got?
I didn't find a VIN lookup on bimmerinfo.com, but this is what I found on the other sites:

I edited my incorrect vin decoder.
It seems the S682 was an automatic antenna but was changed to rear cloth. You car probably came with the nutria leather rear seat. Probably have the build tag with the SA codes on it stapled around one of the cross members of the seat bottom.
S314 is driver and passenger heated mirrors, heated door lock and washer nozzles most of the time.
Nice set of options on that car.
i was under the impression that 'deletion of outer skin preservation' was no cosmoline applied to the exterior of the car before shipping. For local market cars.

Nice looking car! You are just down the road from me. I wish I had been more patient in looking for a replacement rear valance, since I ended up having one shipped over from the Netherlands
sounds like I might have been able to pick yours up locally. Unless yours was also beat up, like mine.
I hope to see you and your car around this summer!
