Any issues with the SMG trans? I am considering buying one but know nothing about these auto shift (clutchless) transmissions . It has 36,000 miles
As a 2003 Z4 this belongs in the E85 2003-2008 section, not the E89 section.
The SMG's are also money pits. If you want an auto I'd get an auto. If you want a manual get a manual. The SMG is the worst of both worlds, unlike newer auto/manual computerized boxes which are the best of both worlds...

I have had my 2003 SMG for about 3 months and 4,000 miles. Bought the car with 29k miles on it, so it's still relatively low miles.
When you watch the videos of Porsche's new DTC transmission and compare it with the SMG, the SMG is really sad. It takes a full second to shift gears unlike the Porsche which is instantaneous. I haven't driven a Z4 with a torque converter, so I can't compare, but my overall feeling is that even though it's not like the Porsche videos, it's a pretty responsive system. Overall I'm happy with it. I plan to just leave it in D and continue to daily drive my Z, not take it to the track or anything. Hopefully I'll avoid the repair issues.
