Awesome comparison. I guess you're right about CX rods, I don't want to be the guinea pig on my 189k motor. I hadn't planned on doing any internals but all this rod bending going on lately on torquey smaller turbos (and I'm going to be 20+psi E85 stock compression GT35R) I guess it couldn't hurt to pick up a $100 set of these M50NV's.

What happens to bottom end balancing (crank counterweights and such) when changing the weight of the reciprocating mass in a big way like this? In my case (NA motor build) I went with Molnar rods (492g) and lighter pistons (can't remember the exact number but at least 50g each less). Plus my S52 crank had most if not all the counterweights ground/machined off (12lbs removed in total). My engine builder balanced the crank to 0g at 8,000rpm (plus or minus .1g) and neutral balanced all the rinds/pistons but what all would this do to the harmonics? I've been spinning the motor to 7,800 rpm for at least 25,000 miles now and so far so good (cautiously crosses fingers behind his back).

My s52 sounded like a mean mother f***** when I let someone drive it the other day. Let's just say top of third to second will get you about 9500 rpm.

+1, don't know why these bent rod threads had to start popping up right when I decide to go FI.

Everyone keeps saying that m52 is good for 500 but I don't see myself pushing mine that far, as much as I'd like to. Just seems risky

I personally would be more worried about pistons. I have been breaking ringlands for a while now, everywhere from about 450whp to what should be 600+ and haven't hurt any connecting rods yet. I am starting to wonder if my issue is rev limiter related though

One thing that BMW needs work on is there shifting linkage it's pretty lame. Glad I put the dual valve springs in or that would have been the money $hift.

All this NV talk has me wanting to do a stock nv turbo build. I bet stock compression with a new Oe head gasket and e85 could go a long way

I'm assembling my new engine and thought I should update this thread. The m50nv rods will NOT fit in an s52 or in an M50 based engine with an s52 crank. The area around the threads for the rod bolt on the rods hit the block just outside the existing notch in the block. You could likely clearance the block and make it work but I think I'm gonna go ahead and buy aftermarket rods. As a side note, I have a set of nice nv rods with brand new arp bolts for sale if anyone wants to build a cheap high hp m52

Can anyone else verify this? I was planning on using my NV rods in my s52 clone.
Got any pictures of the issue?

I don't, it's hard to get my phone in there and have light on it. It is definitely an issue though. You could probably take material off of the rods and some from the block and make it work but at that point why not just spend a little more on aftermarket rods
