I need to replace the rear muffler on my '83 633csi, but after taking a look yesterday, it seems as if the center section and the rear muffler are all one piece? Did I just not look close enough? Where do you suggest I buy a new one?
Thanks
Te original unit was one piece but now if you were to buy it from BMW you could get the rear muffler and have muffler shop weld it in. Other choices for muffler replacements would be borla, Anza. There was a muffler maker called einzsbacher, I now the spelling is not correct, but they were German made and some of the factory mufflers had there name on them.
So looking further, it seems that BMW no longer offers replacement rear mufflers for my '83; neither does Ansa or Borla or any of the rest of them. Other than having one custom fabbed, does anyone have any other suggestions? I want to keep the look and sound stock.
I take it that the exhaust is like the 635. It would be a 2 piece exhaust. They bolt up in the middle. I have a used back half awaiting replacement for my 635.
Mine is actually all one piece from the center resonator back. Since they went 2 piece on the 635s, I can't believe the rear muffler would be very changed from the one in my 633; maybe the hanging points?
How good is your rear muffler?
I am referring to the 2 piece exhaust as it is 2 pieces/sections the way I see it. The first half is from the exhaust manifold to the cat. The second half is where it bolts together at the resonator all the way to the exhaust tips. I must have read something wrong.
I'll check my muffler out, I'm replacing it because the resonator blew out. I have the back half of the exhaust to replace. It bolts together between the cat and the resonator.
My car is an '83 633 which has a slightly different exhaust configuration than your 635. My car originally came with a one piece exhaust from the resonator back to and including the rear muffler. Later cars (635 models) were two piece. I am looking to make my single piece system into a two piece by cutting off the muffler which is bad and either welding or clamping on a new rear muffler.
In researching this further, I have learned that '83-'84 533is used the same exhaust system as my car; unfortunately no one including BMW seems to still build this replacement part.
