Hi,
I am currently driving a 10 plate Arden blue Astra vxr, I want something a little cheaper to run. I commute 7 miles to work very rarely go on the motorway to go anywhere most of my driving is a few miles to the gym, shops + commute to work. I don't think i would benefit from a diesel as i am mostly driving short journeys, not ideal to return good mpg + potential issues with DPF. my budget is around £6500, i suppose this means i am looking at 116i, 118i, 120i. I have heard the engine these all share can be prone to cam chain issues, is this true?
Hello and welcome to the forum - I have not heard about issues with the cam chain, but there have been some reports about high carbon deposits and coil-packs needing changing. I would recommend getting a full PPI report by an independent BMW mechanic if we're looking at one - this will likely save you a lot of headaches and $$ down the line. Hope this helps a bit and best of luck!

I should of mentioned in the first post i'm from the UK, What is a PPI report? is the 118i the most economical
PPI report stands for Pre-Purchase Inspection report. This should be done by a BMW mechanic not associated with the shop where you'd purchase the car (to not have a bias).
