    Throttle position sensors on e-46

Good morning I have question about a tps on e- 46 (2002 325 xi m54). Is there more than 2 sensors? 1 at foot control and 1 at throttle body.

    Well, yes and no.

The systems are both self-checking. There are 2 potentiometers at the throttle pedal, and 2 more potentiometers at the throttle actuator unit. At each location, each of these potentiometers send data to the DME, to advise position . The two pieces of data from each unit are "opposite but equal" and are compared by the DME, to constantly self-check the system. If the two values from either unit do not correspond, VOILA! - you have codes, and likely, limp mode. (This prevents "unintended acceleration" on a drive by wire system.)

So really: 4 "sensors", not 2.

Thank you for response. I did experience limp mode, once code 0121, went away. 40 miles later code 1632, went away. both turned on eml ses abs acs lights. I have a throttle body to change out. This is where throttle actuator unit is located. Yes Chris I am not a mechanic by trade , just a truck driver. But I have some ability.

I have to replace starter, which is what I am doing now. Since I am getting codes and problems, just trying to get it done together.

Hey, Rocket, there was no condescension in my reply. There's no such thing as "just a truck driver", or "just a mechanic".

Now, I don't like to use P-codes to diagnose a BMW, especially when they start relating to the EML (drive by wire) system. AND, you've got codes in the ABS which you need to read, too. Because, really....did the issue start in the ABS/ASC, or in the DME/EML ? Until you know what codes are stored in the ABS, you can't really know that answer.

However, given your codes, and the description you provided, I'd recommend beginning with cleaning the throttle body. Remove the intake elbows, spray carb cleaner, and use a rag and brush to clean the passage of the throttle blade.

Of course, it might not work....but then, replacing the throttle body might not work, either....because one of your codes is for the throttle PEDAL, not the throttle body.

Really, though, you need to read all the codes, with a BMW capable scan tool....but I'd still clean the throttle blade passageway.

I meant no harm in saying "just a driver or mechanic" just seems I have a lot of questions. You are right I should get BMW scanner, I did download INPA but it does not communicate with my elm cords. Every time I get car running good I tell my son to sell it, but he doesn't listen, normal I guess. Car is fun to drive so I don't blame him. No light come on until it starts running crappy, this is when all lights come on. I will try cleaning (seems to be clean in elbows) and replace throttle body, just because I have 3. Thank you for response, I did not think you were condescending .

INPA will not work with ELM. You need an "INPA K+DCAN" cable, with pins 7&8 bridged on the cable, for dual K-line communication.

Not a good morning here, pulled intake to get starter. May have found extra problem. The ccv lower hose leaked oil foam when removed, not good( I think). I am I thinking correctly that the ccv should be replaced? 328 do you know of cheap inpa cable set up?

Replace the oil return hose, if it ripped. (They usually do) (This is the "lower CCV hose", it returns oil to the dipstick tube.) Sure, it's always good to replace all 4 hoses and the valve, but this return hose often dies by itself... Sometimes, you can't see the rip, because of the hose's covering

Chris the hose not ripped. I am wondering if valve is bad, if it should be replaced it would be easier now.

    - - - Updated - - -

I may be over thinking again. the hoses and valve where replaced about 1 year ago.

I thought that it should not have extra oil in it.

It's an oil return hose; that's its job. Bolt the critter back together, you're all good.

Starter replace done. Now problem with eml, codes 0222 and 0123 throttle position sensor switch A circuit high and B circuit low. I know get bmw scanner. Throttle body was replaced with extra one I had, it could be bad I guess. When I clear codes as soon as I start it comes back, before if car would start right light would go out with no pending codes.

I plan on getting new throttle position sensor (pedal assembly). Will this need to be reset in car or is it plug and play?

I'm sorry man, you are way past trying to use P-codes here.

You had p0121 and p0632, now, with a new throttle body, you have p0222 and p0123.

I never trust p-codes anyway, much less when dealing with BMW's drive-by-wire systems.

Clean the old throttle body, reinstall it, and then clear the codes. Then drive it until you get a fault, and let a good BMW diag tool read it. In other words, send Abel a PM, will ya? He has offered to help, but you're diving off the deep end, throwing parts. Diagnosis should come first.

Cable should be delivered today. I sure there will be more questions. Really looking forward to having more informative knowledge, from new cable. Thanks All

Extreme gratitude to 328 power 04. I received cable, made a jumper wire for pin 7& 8. Did get to read codes, got 112 and 113. Once I clear them they come right back. I found a compatible pedal at junk yard 20$, thinking about just picking it up.

    Yep, Abel is the best.

None of us memorize all the various numbers for BMW codes, because we all use diag computers that speak in words....can you tell what the words said, which accompanied "112 and 113" ? Are these "pedal potentiometer A high" and "pedal potentiometer B low"?

(If so, it would seem to me to be unlikely that BOTH potentiometers would fail simultaneously, which might indicate voltage failure....or the plug undone?)

I have throttle sensor 1 and sensor 2 . Doesn't say high or low , only KSD-->VB or LB for sen 1 different for sen2 KS after ground or LB None of this make sense to me, but that is only difference I see

Hmm, I don't have an MS43 close by and set up on desk to see what other simple logging you can do, but under the MS43 Status menus, you may be able to find a menu for throttle and/or pedal position monitoring. MDK = throttle body. PWG = pedal.
And you can activate either or (by hand or foot) to log live signal.

    - - - Updated - - -

    There it is:
    MS43 > Status button > PWG/MDK button

Definitely do test with ignition on, engine off.

Normal operation is one of the sensors goes towards 0v from 5v, and the other sensor goes to 5v from 0v.

You may have to take the intake boot off to watch for movement, and/or move the throttle by hand to see if there's any response as well.

Well first confirm that your pedal is working correctly, so that way you're not looking at the wrong end of it all...
