Hi: Read over your thread again, lots of good information. In one of the pictures above it looks like your car has AC? If that is true and you going to rebuild it?

Hey John. Definitely going to at some point, but not on my priorities list. Maybe when I pull the dash at some point to refurbish or replace it, I might tackle it then, but that’s all up in the air at this point.

Creature comforts like AC and heat aren’t really on my radar at this stage

You are going to fix the front seats; if yes, are they recaro seats and do you know if e30 seats will fit in the 323?
Also, what do you think it will cost to fix the seats?
    thanks,

They’re Recaros, and I haven’t gotten quotes yet, but it’ll be for the whole interior; front seats, door cards, rear sears, rear cards, and rear head rests.

I know e30 seats will fit, but I think custom adapters need to be made.

Before we loaded it up, i got a chance to throw it on the rack and get a look at the under carriage. Being that bad e21 owner that i am, i completely forgot to take pictures. But what i can tell you, is that it looks pretty alright down there from sitting for as long as it did. No major rust areas, just some surface rust in the floor boards, and some on the passenger rocker panel. The rest seemed pretty dang good! Also noted an LSD, which i believe to be a 3.45, but i could be wrong... didnt find a diff tag to confirm, so currently, its a mystery.

    Loading it onto the trailer…

Decided to live dangerously, and take a motion shot (don’t worry, I was being safe!)

After that, my friend and I unloaded it and pushed it into my backyard, where it’ll sit in my courtyard until my garage becomes available.

And here it sits for now, ready for the tear down!

IMG_9300 by Morgan Crockett, on Flickr

Started pulling stuff out of the inside, in preparation for pulling the interior out and getting a look at the floor boards.

    Carpet doesn’t look TOO bad.

From there I pulled out the seats and found a few interesting items…

Under passenger seat, a 90s amplifier for the stereo…

Under the driver’s seat was this! The control unit for the Ungo alarm system… complete with mercury switches! Very very cool… I think I might save this for quite some time.

Finished pulling out the whole interior, but my shop vac was buried in my garage, so I decided to call it quits and clean up. And here’s where it sits now.

After cleaning up, I decided to put the cover back on, just in case… This is Oregon, after all.

And now all tucked into it’s new home!

    Cheers guys, more to come.
What's the plans for any of the rust you found? I know for sure I'm going to have to cut out and replace the trunk in my 320. Are you going to fab that yourself or outsource the work?

Furthermore, do you have any other rust issues you've identified? Have you developed a game plan to tackle that problem?

The trunk rust is fairly straight forward, and i believe i could do that myself if i sourced some welding equipment, but the rust i found under the rear window frame is a bit beyond me. . I also found some rust in the engine bay while i was pulling the engine, directly underneath the brake booster. I don't have clear line of sight of it, but I'm going to pull all that stuff to get a better look at it.

That, and my wife and i are expecting our first kid in about 2 months, so i wont have any time for awhile to do anything on the car, so I'd rather get it sent off to a shop so they can work on the car with no real rush to get it done. that being said, I've got a family friend who manages a restoration shop in Gresham that I'm probably going to have tackle it. The current plan is to have them repair any and all rust they find, repair the holes that were made to federalize it (rear side markers, rear bumper holes, etc.), but not paint anything, just primer it. Still on a limited budget, so I'll repaint later.

While that's going on, I'm going to get the brakes redone, transmission checked out, and the brake booster rebuilt. That'll definitely keep me busy enough with whatever free time i can find.

According to RealOEM, they're the same; Part Number 34331117549 is the same in all e21s and e12s.

Well, it's looking like the Matthes 323i is officially out of reach. Once my friend finally put a lien on the title, he came out of the woodwork and gave my friend some money, which sucks. knowing my luck, the guy will drop off the face of the earth again once I've finished my car, and he'll offer me the car again.

Either way, this is a decent set back for me, considering i was planning on using parts off the car, as well selling the stuff i didn't need to fund more of my car. Oh well!

The worst part is, i'm betting the car is still going to sit there and rot... especially since it was in the same frikken spot Saturday, as it was when i moved it to get my car out, a year and a half ago. It's just sad.

    UPDATE!

Things have been (figuratively speaking) pushed around the last few months with the birth of our new son, so "Project 323i" has been on hold with the kiddo taking up all my time. It's not a bad thing, he's an absolute riot when he's not crying, peeing, or pooping! but, good news is, i just got off the phone with a body shop in Portland that is knowledgeable with older BMWs, and isn't afraid of taking on rust repair... only issue is, he's booked up until next month, at best. So! Car will sit in its comfy garage space, out of the rain and cold wind. I still have plenty of other things to do (that have also been on hold), one of which being bringing home a crappy donor e21 to chop up for the majorly rust spots... like the trunk liner tray area, and the nasty holes in the window seal area.

    Lots to do! Cheers, y'all.

Still alive and lurking. Decided to go a different direction with the engine... so no more M20B25. Also looking for a body shop to go through and repair all the rust in the trunk and the bits that were found in the engine bay. i have a couple of shops in mind, but their availability isn't meshing well with mine. Still slowly gathering parts too. Since my last post, i have acquired headers, a Schrick 284 cam, and a genuine BBS front spoiler.... because why not. Austin8753 is a horrible friend to have sometimes...

Definitely haven't given up on that other car either... just not fighting for it as strongly as i was before. Cheers y'all, and Happy New Years.

Was always wanting to do a stroker with ITBs, but was gonna do it later since the B25 was a good deal and fell into my lap, but since it needed a few hundred dollars in regular maintenance stuff, I decided against it. The car isn’t gonna be running tomorrow, so might as well piece together what I really want over time...

At least that’s what my illogical brain is telling me.
