I have a 2001 bmw 540i that doesnt want to start.
I checked all the fuses, plugged it into bmw scanner 1.4.0 and had a locksmith come out program a new key to the ews system.
Heres the issues
Cant sync the EWS and DME
EWS-DME Adaptation: fail (E= EWS 1, DME 4, DME 5) (from bmw scanner 1.4)
DTC {hex 94} {dec148} EWS 3.3 interface DME-EWS (from bmw scanner 1.4)
Original immobilizer chip not working (locksmith confirmed)
New key programmed but my car is not reading the new key
Checked resistance of transponder coil at EWS plug, read 3.4 ohms
Do I turn the key 200 X to fix the rolling code issue?
Do i have to replace my ews unit?
What do I do to get it back on the road?
Any easy fixes?
Can anyone help me?

I know you may not want to hear or do it, but maybe the dealer is best for this unique problem. Must be so frustrating! I hope you get this resolved. Please let us know how it is remedied.
I bought a replacement DME and modified EWS module that has the EWS disabled in the DME, car started right away after sitting for 7 weeks...
Locksmith programmed a new key inside the ews module, and after not starting with the new key, and unable to do a resync with his software, we completed further testing and determined the original chip that came with the key stopped working (stopped sending its unique id when energized), and the key ring antenna failed to energize when reading the chip inside the key....
Instead of ordering new parts, i am going to send out the original dme and ews for re alignment or synchronization with professional software that is able to unlock the EWS and immobilizer inside the dme, then order a new ring antenna, if necessary....
For now, I am just happy I have my car working and im not studying the bus schedules or calling uber to get around anymore....
When I discover what the issue was, i will post it up, and then i will utilize my unlocked dme as a backup or failsafe dme, or i will simply use it to perform magic tricks on unsuspecting BMW's utilizing the 7.2 dme....
To be continued....

Well, based on your description above, the car did start with the replacement DME and modified EWS modules.
Your problem is with the new key. That is where I'd look.
Leave the DME/EWS alone for now.
Don't expect any answers, reikonrad1 hasn't been here since 5/24/17. He only has 3 posts here so he's probably history.
That DME-EWS error usually indicates a bad EWS module...
