    996 Brembo brake project

    I've started installing the following:

    Front:

Porsche 996 Brembo caliper, custom power coated and decaled
    Rally Road Bracket
    Rally Road stainless lines
OEM Euro E46 CSL floating 345mm rotors
    Hawk HPS pads

    Rear:

Porsche 996 Brembo caliper, custom power coated and decaled
    Rally Road Bracket
    Rally Road stainless lines
OEM Euro E46 CSL floating 328mm rotors
Hawk HPS pads(fronts for a NON S Boxster FYI)

I've had very small pauses along the way. For example, the pads that came out of the Brembos, never seen anything like it before.

They were described to me "dampeners". I am not sure if I need them. I will install the Hawks as is, If I need to I will scrape them free of the OEM pads and glue them onto the Hawks. So there may be a bit of trial and error there.

I also found the stock rotor retention screw does not seat into the new rotors.

I found ECS had the right ones and offered stainless ones for a dollar more so I have those on the way.

While I have the car in this state I am addressing some little things.

I had liquefied my wheel well splash shields when I drove with no bumper and thought zip tying them off the tires would work.

I have had new ones sitting around for 4yrs so those are going in. I also bought all new under trays and ducts that attach to them as those were damaged. I've been an idiot and hit 130mph with none of that stuff there which I am sure created some lift.

I have an identical setup for the brake on the rear which I will tackle next week after some travel.

    Wow, Impressive looking brakes.

    A couple of questions:
    - Do you have to change the master cylinder in order to keep the hydraulic design correct?
    - Are you keeping the original ABS unit?
    - Will the rear park/emergency brake still work with the E46 CSL rotors?
    - What sizes wheel are needed to clear the brakes?
    1999 2.8L Z3 Roadster,
    2000 3.0L Z3 Roadster,

There is only one thing more pleasurable than working on a Z3, that's driving it top down on a fine day.

    Nope, no changes required

    - Are you keeping the original ABS unit?

    Maintains ABS

    - Will the rear park/emergency brake still work with the E46 CSL rotors?

    Parking brake still works

    - What sizes wheel are needed to clear the brakes?

I think 18's are required, though some of the aftermarket 17's are designed with big brakes in mind.

    M roadsters came with brembos?

For the rears.. are you using rear 996 calipers or the same front calipers for the rears?

No, the question was why put on 996 Brembos when you could put on Brembos made for the M Roadster. Just wondering.

Your link shows about $7k for front and rear. I had some hookups to get them so cheap, but I'm into it for under $2k.

I'm doing the same setup right now. But on a 3.0L. I got the calipers for 75$ each on car-part.com and got them powder coated red for 80$

The whole setup is pretty good

Lots of people say the stock ones are fine. From what I understand a multi piston will have a better feel than a single piston slider. Bigger rotors should also help. And they also look way better with the 18" wheels.

I'm running 328mm csl rotors but there are cheaper options in the same size.

Exactly. And at $1600-1800 I've done everything top shelf. I could have saved $300-400 by grabbing eBay or junkyard calipers. But for $800 a set, it was worth it to get the calipers coated and decaled to my specifications.

That's really a great deal for what you are getting. I have plans to do this to my M as well. My main hold up is that I really love my roadstar wheels and would hate to part with them. I know someone on here made some 18" and 19" versions of them but I don't want to spend $4k on wheels!

Looking forward to seeing your setup finished and on your car.

The rear end of the 3.0 L is a lot smaller than the M, park brake shoes, rotor center housing etc. Are you using the same E46 CSL rotors and 996 calipers or something different to accommodate the smaller non-M rear end?

You definitely want to keep those funny looking cylinders on the back of the pads. Those are vibration dampeners and help keep the pads from making noise.

I heard that's what they are called. But why aren't they on the new pads?

For Porsche parts, they're usually sold separately and are attached to the caliper pistons, not the pads. I've seen similar things attached to pads on sliding caliper brakes, but not on a fixed caliper.

Thanks. Ordered an oem set. Why take a chance and skimp when a set of fronts were $50.

I got brackets for the rear from a guy on this forum. He is from Poland. His brackets use E36 M3 rear rotors, and they have a pressed in steel sleeve to make the ebrake smaller for the Z3

Turns out the Hawks I had opened were for the rears.

    The fronts look quite different.

My thinking is Hawk came up with their own dampener system hence the metal cylinders at the corner.

I have a call out to Hawk. I do not know if they can or should be used in conjunction with the Porsche dampeners or in place of them.

So I spoke to Hawk. Just as I thought. The corners on the Hawk pads with the metal cylinders are their design for dampeners. They confirmed using my OEM new dampeners in conjunction with the pad is perfectly fine, its basically doubling up on anti noise measures.

I now have all 4 corners bolted up. I just need to put on the lines(doh, needed to buy brake lines wrenches) and bleed the brakes.

Only one thing is worrying me. On one of the rear Brembos, cylinder like fingers are forged into the caliper which allows the pads to seat onto them. They hover 5-8mm off the rotor. On this one though, on one side, its so close a pc of paper catches.

Those cylinders on the edge of the pad can also be found on the factory OEM Pads....have a 997 OEM set with them in place.

I have the same set up on my M Coupe and it works well, a couple of things to note is the discs/rotors are handed and from the last picture they are fitted the wrong way round - part number ending 445 should be on the left side, also you can use part number 34111123072 as the disc retaing bolt for the front discs which is a smaller version of the one pictured.
