So until someone dyno's different cam timing settings, we are really just guessing what setting feels best? I'm on stock S50 cams and will be doing timing anyway so I'm interested in this process but outside of renting a ton of dyno time, how can you know what affect your base timing has when VANOS is doing it's thing?

Interesting. You just use part of an old cam tray to hold a solid puck/lifter on top? In this case are the measurements 180deg out of phase?

Yes cam tray upside down with cam tower removed using a old stock lifter to get reading to the indicator

Rtv, I use a cutring with arp 2 torqued to 90 ft lbs
The rtv is just a percautionary deal in that common oil leak area.

Brad - to make the lifter a solid lifter, would putting a tack weld on a spare set of lifters work? Im assuming that when the lifter is out of the cam tray they are fully extended?

There is a spring in the lifter that will hold the lifter face against the cam. It's not necessary to do any thing special to the lifters while degreeing the cams. We only care about the cam which is measured at the face of the lifter, not the actual valve movement.
If you are measuring the piston to valve clearance, put the dial indicator directly on the valve tip, no cams, trays or lifters.

I tried to do it on my own M50B28NV build with dual intake cams, but i need to make a custom extension for the dial indicator. Because everytime I´ve been measuring, I got different numbers as the contact of the indicator slipped from the lifter.

Anyway I have a question. I´m trying to set my camshafts (both 240deg, 9.7mm lift) on m50b28 non vanos for turbo (hx35). But i don´t know how to properly time them.
I would like to have faster spool and more mid range torgue, and good power curve to the rev limiter (7500rpm). The engine has 10.5:1 compression, running on ethanol e85.
Last week I spent on the internet finding some numbers. I´ve heard that the best way is advance both cams and lower the overlap. Is that true ? Could you advice me some numbers ?
Next problem is that i dont know how to properly time the cams. I have instaled degree wheel on the crankshaft and the gauge for measuring position of the cams. I think there is a problem with hydraulic lifters, i´m not able to find surely when the IV and EV opens, when closes. Everytime i recieve slightly different numbers or i cant get on the duration number 240°, but only around 200°. I´m using 0.05" technique.
I think i will try easier lobe centerline method. Can somebody tell me some numbers to set?
