    New M4/ Oil

Hello, I almost hesitate to bring up the subject of oil, it always caused wars on the IBMWR forums years ago but here goes.

I am a US Army contractor who works in Germany. This Thursday I will be picking up a 2018 Smoked Topaz M4 convertible. I went to bmwusa.com and put in my VIN to access the online manual, looking up the suggested oil, BMW states:

When selecting an engine oil, make sure that the engine oil has the viscosity grade SAE 0W-30. Alternatively, also engine oils with viscosity grades SAE 5W-30, SAE 0W-40 or SAE 5W-40 can be used.

Now my car will mainly be driven in the summer and that and on the autobahn. My assumption was that it would be better to use a 40 grade oil due to the higher heat and pressure.

Am I all wet on this? Would 30 weight be better, or is BMW trying to appease the government with better gas mileage?

    Thanks

I would go with the 30 since that's how it comes from the factory. 40 is not going to do damage - your assumption is correct. Enjoy that magnificent car and please let us know if you have any questions!

Unless you're tracking the car and really putting the engine under stress, you're not going to see any significant benefit from going to a heavier weight oil.

My opinion on Autobahn and summer use only,5w-40 as suggested by BMW,
Just make sure it's a BMW recommended top grade full synthetic oil.
