Bumper paint with primer - sanding required?

Hello. I'm putting in a new plastic front bumper. Actually put it in already. Going to can spray paint it soon. Going to hit it with a primer first. Since I'm using a primer, can I skip the sanding and just clean and dry ? Its a new plastic non fibreglass bumper. Thanks. Fred

Correct me if I'm wrong and it wouldn't be the first time but isn't one of the concepts of sanding is to provide microscopic marks/scratches for the paint to grab a hold onto? Imagine a surface so smooth, paint can't adhere to it properly and then flakes off later.
So, check out You Tube and find the suggested grit to sand with.
