    Cruise Control Problems

Hi Hope this is the right thread - this is my first post...

    I recently bought a 2004 BMW X3 3.0i

I have tracked down numerous vacuum leaks in the old hose and replaced them one by one. The CCV hoses are being replaced tomorrow, and that should be that!

The last problem I am tracking down is the Cruise Control.

When I press the CC button on the steering wheel, nothing happens.

This is what I know about the problem so far.....

    1. When I do a lamp test, the CC light illuminates (something it doesn't do when the button is depressed)
    2. With a diagnostic computer hooked up, I know the steering wheel CC button is sending a signal (i.e I can see it going 'active')

Can anyone with experience of this problem give any advice, as to what might be causing the problem, and where I should maybe look next.

    Regards
    Mark T

Hi Mark - welcome to the forum! Are you able to have the codes read from the diagnostic tool? It'll give you an exact place to start troubleshooting. There should be some stored codes that you could pull. Lastly, I've attached a link to our site's DIY tech articles on the X3 for any maintenance or issues that may arise in the future. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Hi Thanks for that...My OBDC code reader doesn't give any codes for the cruise control problem, but I'll ask the garage to run their software on it again (their software hung when trying to read my car!)

Its in today to have the CCV hoses replaced, which should clear the P0171 and P0174 codes, and I've asked them to have a look at the cruise control again

    Regards
    Mark

My fault code reading is 2806 'Speed Control time limit for data transfer' Does this point to a wiring fault?

I cannot confirm this, but I would guess it may be a wiring fault.

Possible causes: Transmission Range Sensor not properly aligned. Faulty Transmission Range Sensor. Transmission Range Sensor harness is open or shorted. Transmission Range Sensor circuit poor electrical connection

Thats great, thanks - are these sensors inside the transmission? I'll probably find the harness in the engine bay and work backwards looking for wiring problems
