a couple weeks ago, i received a check "gas cap" error message which caused the check engine light to come on. replaced the cap with a bmw cap, cleared the warning light and a week later i'm getting the gas cap error and the check engine light is back on. am i having sensor issue and if so, is it an item that i can replace myself? vehicle only as 31k miles on it.
What code are you getting? P0443?
If you already replaced the gas cap, you may need a fuel tank breather valve. It's in the engine bay - fairly accessible and easy to replace.

Be nice to know what your driving but...
If it's E70 You most likely are setting tc 2A16 for minor leak. I believe there is programming available for due software sensitivity error.
if not them you could have a small DMTL leak or your DMTL pump is faulty.
i'm told its a e55. i'm also told that the only thing left to change is mvld pump concerning the system. anyone had experience with this?
What's an "e55"?

This forum is a multi-generational X5 & X6 forum (e53/e70/e71) which goes from 2000-2013...so you could be referring to multiple types of X5s that have completely different engines, trannys, options, etc.
For example....these are the e53 X5 models:

i was misinformed. its an e70 and the pump is a dmtl pump. that why i always check with this forum after talking to anyone.
See post 5.
its also possible your fuel pump ground wire has burned through the top of your fuel pump. This can also cause the symptoms you describe. BMW just released a new recall on this issue. Get yours checked to see if you fit the recall.
i've seen a couple recalls, but not one for the ground wire. where can i look that one up? will definitely check it out, recall or no recall.
replaced the gas cap, breather valve and the dmtl pump. check engine light back on after 2 days and i'm still getting the "tighten gas cap" error message
Maybe instead of throwing parts at it, you should have a proper diagnosis done? Diagnosing a car properly the first time, is worth it's weight in gold, even if you have to pay the dealership to do it. If you're getting a code for an evap system leak, the only way to find it is with a smoke machine. There could be a tiny pin hole in any one of the many vent lines, hoses, connectors, etc. It also could be the access port on top of the gas tank. The pins could have burned up and caused a vapor leak. Or the flange seal could be bad. There's a million things it could be. Stop throwing money at the problem and have it diagnosed by someone with the proper knowledge, tools, and experience.
