Hello everyone!
My name is Alex, and I just joined into this forum since I went to the dark side of my newly purchased vehicle. I will post pictures of her after the introductory post.
So, I got myself a 2011 BMW 550I with the 6 speed manual transmission and 73k miles on the clock. Space grey metallic exterior and what seems to be a terra dakota interior. It is beautiful, very well kept and non smoker so it still smells new inside. Bought it used in Tampa, FL at a nice dealership and everyone there was nice and assisted me greatly so I can drive the car home. The cost with the $1700 down payment and trade in of my previous car comes out near 27k. Approved for payments of 356/month and 160/month for insurance.
Now I didn't know what I got into after reading the horror stories of the N63 AFTER buying the car.....lol so I looked around to see if anything was done on the car. Apparently the CCP was done since all 8 injectors are Index 12, one bank has new coils, both turbos were replaced since the build date stated 2016, and overall the car felt very healthy. No smoking or anything. Clutch felt strong, shifts smooth as butter, just a great running car.
Should I say that this beast is ridiculously quick, hard to believe such a heavy car can move so well. And with the JB4, it may be ludicrous.
So I also went ahead and did the starting preventative maintenance such as replacing all the spark plugs, changing the oil and filter, air filter change and topping any fluids off if needed. 6 plugs were somewhat new and two were worn but no signs of oil burning or fuel injection issues. I might have to change the second bank coilpacks soon so I can have a good set. Oil consumption is OK, it goes through a quart every 2k miles. It is crazy that BMW allows up to 750 miles per quart of oil consumed.
Also did small cosmetic mods such as changing out the old people chorme/grey kidney grilles for the gloss black ones that matches my black trim. My fiance bought me a ///M weighted shift knob which makes such a night/day difference when it comes to shifting (never knew how horrible the stock knob was after changing it over to the M knob).
Lastly, I did the muffler delete and added quad stainless steel staggered tips so I can actually hear the car. They really muted the car which is a shame since it has such a monstrosity of an engine. Now it sounds pretty aggressive yet tamed.
So hello again, great to be part of the new experience. She now has 84k miles, which is 13k miles over the course of 4 months (yes, I drive ALOT) and no issues to state
That old spec is 1Q every 1000 miles and 1Q every 750 on M/// cars is archaic and not really used these days.
you most likely need valve seals.
Congrats!!
Let see some pics
1 quart consumed in 2k miles is perfectly normal and not a cause for concern nor an indication the valve stem seals are going out. When that does happen the car will be chugging oil like a frat bot with a beer bong and poofing white farts out the tail pipes.
At 73k though unless its already been done all of the oil/coolant supply & return lines in the v likely are leaking and need replacing. Pull the turbos and replace -everything- in one go. Those engines need this attention every 50-75k.
