I'm most of the way through changing the heater core in my 91 Jspec and just before putting the dash on I realized the foam gasket between the dash and heater box is toast. I have read that the ones I can buy are too thin and need to doubled up. Order time is over two weeks and $30 each from local dealer and I don't want to wait that long with pieces spread out in the basement. I see where others have made gaskets but the one I have is so bad that I have no idea what it should be like. I made a template for the general shape but what I really need is How thick should it be and if it is the same thickness front and back??
I'm a sucker for punishment as after I get this back together I can start to contemplate the upper oil pan gasket next.

I used some foam from Lowe's used to seal around window a/c units. I think it was about 2" x 2". I used double sided adhesive tape to put it down.

That is what I needed!! Thank you. I did a search but found neither of those threads.
I use 3/8" foam weatherstripping from HomeDepot or Lowes. A roll will cost you about $5. Works much better than the BMW crap.

...the price of cool ain't cheap!
The foam tapers from thick in front to thin in the rear. You can trim the foam with scissors.

I had a 2ft square piece of soft 1" foam. Glued it into 2" thick then cut out the shape with an electric knife (great for cutting foam). Tapered it from 2" at 'back' to under an inch. Should be good, I'll try fitting the dash in the morning.
