Hi there i have a 2001 e46 330i auto and recently it stalled on me at a stop sign. And today stalled again and took a while to start again, i was cranking over and over for a while. it eventually started and was Driving away like nothing happened
suprisingly no engine light has shown up or any lights for that matter i havent plugged in a code reader yet but plan to.
it has a brand new VDO good quality maf sensor so im guessing it wont be that, im planning to clean throttle body and iac valve.
Ive heard a lot about splits in the intake boot but when i clean throttle body ill be able to check for splits
Could it be a camshaft position sensor or is it just a dirty throttle body or iac valve??
any help appreciated
cheers
A scan for codes will prevent unnecessary parts purchases.
Post up the codes as soon as they're available.
My car had similar symptoms intermittently along with a loss of power especially in the lower rpm range. After a few weeks the engine light came on and I had a cam sensor code. Intake I think. Definitely check for any fault codes.

Fuel pump is a really common failure point on 80k plus miles E46's. If it's stalling or has long cranks get a fuel pump and fuel filter from FCP Euro (lifetime warranty OE part) and try changing the fuel filter first. After that, if it still stalls or has problems put the fuel pump in. I'm almost positive it's the fuel pump if it's never been changed.
Will be sure to check codes soon
does a code for fuel pump come up or not if its faulty?
cheers
Not necessarily, dependent on scan tool software, codes may provide clue.
These cars computers will not throw a fault directly linked to the fuel pump, simply because they have no way to know (there is no fuel pressure sensor on these). Generally a lack of other faults points to a fuel supply issue.
My bet is on Intake camshaft sensor, its the most common i see for random stalling, and it will throw a code.

Just a thought could the disa valve have anything to do with it??
Not sure if its been replaced or anything, but could it be something to do with this?
Cheers
Scan for codes, quit guessing.
No The disa valve wont cause stalling
When this was happening to my 03 330i, it was the CPS. I dealt with it twice... The intake CPS failure caused stalling and hard start issues (esp after car was warm) and the exhaust side caused stalling during breaking... Nevertheless, I received codes in both incidences...
Since we've going to attempt to diagnose without codes, let's proceed with maintenance items prone to failure.
The stalling points to fuel or ignition system faults.
Check fuel pressure at fuel rail with FPG.
Remove rubber intake boot and inspect for cracks, and before you replace it if cracked,
also spray clean the throttle bore with Throttle Body Cleaner.
Remove and inspect sparkplugs, if fouled, or showing signs of age-replace.
If symptoms persist, scan for codes.

Just scanned the codes and got one hit turns out it was code p0344 an intake cam sensor intermittant will hopefully get a new one soon
Cheers for all the help
Ive got another question because intake sensors gone bad is it best to get an exhaust one aswell?? Just in case

Make sure to source only a BMW OE or OEM sensor to prevent new anomalies.

Yes i know had other experience with non oem parts not with bmw but with anything, had a look at fcp euro site and they got good quality stuff so might get it off there but i know a place that does oem quality parts
when i scanned the code it said it was an intermittant fault so maybe just maybe it was a glitch of somesort but i doubt it

Update: Ordered both upper and lower intake boots aswell as an intake cam sensor should arrive tomorrow morning hopefully!!
Cool... Hopefully you got OEM sensor!
I'm glad to see you are replacing the 2 intake boots. There is a small ribbed tube that branches off the lower boot. It is a very common failure point that allows large amounts of unmetered air to enter the system. Too much unmetered air will cause the car to run very lean. That bellows tube had a large split on my 04 330 when I got it. It caused my short turn fuel trims to run in excess of 20% when I connected the scanner.
Im in the process of replacing the crank case vent tubes and the oil separator. From what I've read it's a very common failure item.
