Hi First post though not a first time BMW or classic car owner. Previously in my youth owned a very green late model 02 tii...why did I sell it..
I am looking at buying a very nice E3 silver 75,000kms body interior mechanicals good. Interior is blue velour and exceptional, the body very good. Recent brake work.
It is also a manual - 4 speed and has ALPINA wheels.
Took it for a test drive yesterday and noted the following and wondered if anyone could comment.
Power steering pump noisy when at 3/4 left or right lock.
Engine temp after a short climb up a local hill albeit steep climb, almost hit the second bar, though quickly moved to the middle of 1 -2 on descent.
Very noisy fan on general driving and or was a prop shaft whirring noise? Made it sound like I was driving an auto.
Idle wouldn't drop below 13-1400
clutch had a lot of travel only grabbing at the very last
Car floated - suggesting shocks and or springs require doing.
Oil on the steering link suggesting main seal?
Not knowing this model well, are the above the norm and par for the course or need further exploration?
I know the rear rotors need replacing
I think the shocks should be replaced and probably the springs.
Driving the car was very gentlemanly, though if purchased would like to enhance the driving feel and experience.
As well as above 'minor' issues on the test drive that may need attention what would be effective driver improvements, I'm not wanting to make this a boy racers neg cambered creation, but instead implement subtle enhancements e.g with slight lowering, firmed ride, improved acoustics engine and braking as required.
suggestions on
Shocks
Sway bars
Springs
Brakes
mild engine improvements - cam? compression?
Exhaust
Gearbox is a 4 speed does 5 speed do more than provide a highway gear?
Any other thoughts?
I have a set of period correct NOS Scheel 401s sport seats in a matching blue velour I might install.
Comments and thoughts appreciated
cheers Michel
