    Unhappy E46 316I Camshaft WEIRD problem

    Hello ,

    I have a 316I E46 ,1999 , M43 Engine , 77 Kw , 105 CP , 1.9 , Petrol

    Symptoms :
    - starts a little late JUST at cold ( but not to late ) ;
    - at idle it's ok ;
    - when i drive and put it in neutral sometimes stays a little up on RPM and sometimes it starts to drop ( oscillate ) - both symptoms occurs until i get to a complete stop !! at a complete stop the IDLE is ok again .

    I get the error on the camshaft sensor but it is not permanent error and i tried / replaced :

    - I changed 4 cam sensors ( 2 original , 2 aftermarket ) ;
    - a new MAF ;
    - new spark plugs ;
    - I even tried another ignition coil ;
    - changed the gaskets on the intake manifold ( all of them ) ;
    - new PCV ;
    - new vacuum hoses ;
    - new EGR valve ;
    - new intake boot ;
    - cheked intake manifold for craks ;
    - cheked the wires for continuity ;
    - and the last thing i changed the DME with another one from a 318I and even mounted a disa valve ;

    ..... i'm out of ideas PLEASE HELP !!!!!!

    Have you checked the camshaft timing?

    Hello again ,

    Tried another IDLE regulator , and measured the throttle valve switch .. same problems .

    How do i check the Camshaft Timing ???

    There are special tools for setting cam timing. A tdc pin that locks the crankshaft in the tdc position and a cam lock tool. I have never seen a 4cyl e46 (never sold here in the USA) but it looks pretty simple. Online search and you will find the process and you can buy the tools. If the timing is off you need to find out why. Check tensioner, guides and chain. Good luck.
