Ok.. I'm pretty savy on mechanical ability (just replaced the head gasket) so I'm not afraid of changing the fluid or the filter. The only thing stopping me is I've read in a few places and been told do not change the fluid or filter if I"m not having problems. The car has 165K on it and the PO treated it horribly so I'm assuming he didn't change the fluid.
Anyone changed the fluid in the A5S 360R Auto trannythat has life time fluid? And had problems after the fact? It just seems wrong to me.

Thanks..
Lifetime for BMW = warranty period of the car
Change it.
Wrong sub-forum also - this is not a DIY or Fix, it's a request for info.
No, virtually everyone agrees that the 'lifetime fill' is total BS.
Personally I firmly believe the "if you get above 100k, never change it because you'll disturb the fine balance of dirt molecules!!!!" is bullcrap too.
Honestly if putting fresh fluid in truly creates a tranny problem, you were probably about to be stranded any moment anyway.
With the 540 boxes at any rate, I think a lot of those "my tranny didn't make noises until I changed the fluid waaahhh" stories are from underfilling. I have seen them need top off after a change. Something about bleeding, either maybe wasn't fully run up properly on the lift, or some other fluke that occurs to make them not fully take up all the fluid.
