No I was not planning to sell it. Unfortunately got hit on the quarter panel left side. about $4200 to fix. Insurance company (of the other party) is offering to buy the car for 4950 or so. I told them they are not even in the ballpark.
And that is where you guys come in. This car has 184k, genuine factory five speed car with original trans and original engine. all body panels except trunk lid have matching vins. Original paint except for some parts of the rear (long before my ownership began in 2005). Service records from 1997 and about 60k miles. Always garaged during my ownership. Car is all stock except for the front end of the stereo. Needs new tension straps for the top, and a new actuator rod for the top motor (got bent because of the tension straps). NO RUST. rock chips on front end as you would expect. Paint is very nice except for that. driver seat needs re cover, needs some bolsters but I have a perfect seat to donate those parts. My plan before the car got wrecked was to replace the interior, a diy project. Obviously a moot point now.
What I am looking for is recent comps for similar cars (plastic bumper convertibles with a five speed trans). Nice, STOCK well maintained drivers that need a few loose ends tied up to be really nice in other words. Similar mileage, give or take 10k or so. Preferably within the western states area but I'll take anything solid.
My ultimate aim was to get the car repaired, but anything involving substandard work or a salvage title is a no go item. This car currently has a clean title.

Check craigslist here in california (i am in san diego). Seem like there is plethora of verts out for sale now.
yeah I'm finding a lot of verts also. The problem is that they are not what I would consider comps. They are either a lot better, 318 convertibles, or a lot worse. The insurance company is saying comps exist, but I cannot seem to find them. If it's any more than 100 miles from me, that triggers travel expenses and shipping expenses to get said comp to me, assuming it is acceptable. And of course, pie in the sky insurance company does not want to consider the fact that this is not a sentra, and I cannot go 10 miles and find 10 of them. The closest thing I could find is 7k, in Provo, and I think that one was an automatic. Which for obvious reasons, is not a comp.

I check the ads almost every day, i know its a disease, but i certainly will let you know if something 'good' comes up..
Ask on r3v vert sub forum as well
http://enthusiastauto.com/qsearch/?i...orm_display=51
Call them and see what they want for that vert. That'll give you the upper limit.
If your e30 runs bad, switch to Megasquirt first. Then try new spark plugs, cap and rotor, wires, oxygen sensor, crank shaft position sensor, coolant temp sensor, air flow meter, idle control valve, throttle position sensor, digital motor electronics unit, harmonic balancer, fuel injectors, engine harness...
First thing to consider is that you'll want to do a national search for comps, you can't let them get away with a 10 (or even 100 mile) radius for a car this old and in varying states of repair.
One that was a little bit nicer than yours (based on your description), but not all original sold recently on Bring a Trailer (in Vegas, at that) for just over 8k: http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1989-bmw-325i-10/.
However, your value with that mileage and current state (can't count the parts you have available but haven't installed, unfortunately) is probably around $5k-7k, maybe more since people seem to like plastic bumpers. I'm fairly surprised that the insurance company started at almost 5k for you. They'll usually try to come in much lower.
You can ask them to email you their comps. Not sure if they have to, but here in WA I've gotten their comps both times I've helped someone thru this process. No point in challenging what they come up with, but it gives you an idea what you can present as alternative comps. As long as yours seem reasonable to them - and don't take much time to review - you'll get an adjustment from them. If it seems like you're not getting what you need, ask for a manager quickly and with as little argument as possible. Time is money, calendar days of unsettled liability are money, they want to close the case with as little of each as possible. Help them do that and they'll help you.
There's a 52k mile vert on BaT right now. http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1990-bmw-325i-9/

Ooh, definitely keeping an eye on that one.
It says the interior is stock, but that looks way too bright of a red for anything BMW offered stock. That looks like e92 coral red. Maybe it was refinished at one point. Or maybe it's just the pictures. But cardinal red, the brightest e30 red leather option, is a fairly muted red. It's the color of the wings of a cardinal, not the chest or head.
