Starting from scratch on my e46

I have working copies of INPA and DIS 44 on my Dell laptop. I've been using the Tiny ADS interface for several years on all of my e36s. I can access all modules and perform all functions with no issues.

I just bought a 2004 330. I still get very lost trying to weed through all the threads about modifying this and bridging that. Is there any way to use my ADS interface and an adapter for my OBD 2 port? Are there any changes I need to make inside DIS so I can use it to do things like recode my central locking and turn on my factory alarm?

So far I've made these changes....EDIABAS.bin I've changed interface to STD:OBD. I ran the OBD.exe a long time ago. I created a OBD.ini file with the correct com port for the USB port I'm using. I saved that file to the EDIABAS bin folder and to C:windows because I saw threads saying to do both. I followed instructions to reprogram the chip in my K-Dcan cable. I think the program was MPROG. I changed to port settings to match the com port in Device Manager. I turned latency down to 1.

After all all that I can get power and ignition dots to turn black in INPA but it won't read the dme. It will read lots of other modules but not the dme. I haven't tried using it with DIS.

You will need to have pins 7&8 bridged on the K+DCAN for your car, which uses dual K-Lines. That is a complete necessity.

K+DCAN cable may not like being reprogrammed in mprog (for things like inverting signals), that's more for the VAG KKL, but it will still connect.
MProg settings generally edit the 'black dots' behavior and cable LED behavior, but won't affect how it diagnoses modules.

Ok I have a cable that has the 232RL chip. Pin 7/8 are bridged. Cable is using COM7. Latency is set to 2. When I start INPA the power and ignition dots are black. When I connect the cable to the car they stay black. When I turn on the ignition they stay black. It looks like I can access all modules except the dme. When I try that I get an error message saying that control unit not found. I checked all my files and it looks like I have all the correct ones for my m54 unless I'm missing something.

You should be trying MS45, I believe, for your year model. Even though the INPA menu may say for M56.

I tried that. The ms45 is in German. From what I read so far BMW started shipping the 330 with the ms45 dme around 2004.

Ok I got things running. Went back and checked every part of my install and made a few changes. Not sure if it matters but some of my text in OBD.ini was not in caps so I changed that. Also changed a couple com port settings in device manager. It's up and running and I was also able to use DIS to recode the car to activate the factory alarm that I just installed.

I keep a shortcut to obd.ini on my desktop along with ediabas.ini. My ADS interface is always com1, and my K+dcan is always com4. I just change the line in OBD.ini to switch back and forth. Way quicker then screwing around with port settings in device manager.
