Ok i recently got a 1998 BMW 318i 4door....im pretty sure it has the 1.9 4cyl...but im not sure..honestly it says 2.5 on the Overflow bottle...so will be doing more research on that....
Back to topic..if it turns out to be 1.9 is it worth it to Turbo...this will be a pieced kit..not gonna chance ebay kits cause honestly the material isnt really ideal for long time use....
any advise on this build will be appreciated...and please no comments that are really silly...i can take alittle fun but i really want this to be right and not half assed....im coming from the honda scene so things are way different with bimmers...
thanks again in advance
Although not as common in the BMW world, there are plenty of boosted 16V 4 cyl motors... the principals are all the same in the end.
Just comes down to what you want (or end goal and I use the term end goal lightly because boost is addictive), what your budget is and what your skill set is.
There really isn't any difference between boosting one motor over another.
If you have the knowledge to build and tune one, you can do another.
You'll have an advantage with the 6 cyl cars because you will readily be able to find/buy even used parts like manifolds, turbos, piping, even full exhaust systems and also tunes with complete fueling (MAF, inj, pump, etc). These things will never be as common for the 4 cyl BMW of your vintage.
Hrmm, the 2.5 is the volume (L) of the washer fluid bottle, not the engine displacement.

The only difference between turbo'ing your Honda from the 4-banger BMW is that the engine is pointed a different direction. The fundamentals should be the same.
Main difficulty with the 4cyls is not as many readily available parts. There is no reason a 4cyl turbo will not work well, its just less common due to the abundance of 6cyl engines.
In a 98 you will have a 1.9L 4cyl (M44b19).
Websites like M42club, 318ti.org, and R3vlimited will have more information on the 4 cylinder engines than you will find on here. There are plenty of turbo examples to look at and see which way you want to go. You can always ask here too
This might be a better for you and the 1.9

I've seen used used kits frequently
I swapped in a 4cyl when my M20 blew. Idea was to make a light car and turbo to get more power than the 6. It can be done, but I often regret not just going the easy route and plopping in a 24v 6cyl. So much easier!
When I manage to destroy the 4cyl I will go back to a 6 for sure. There are so many more parts available and not everything needs to be custom.

DASC kits are good because its plug and play. Other than that there is not much benefit IMO. With the added weight you might just as well go 6cyl. Using a twin screw unit might make it more worthwhile but at that point might as well go turbo for the cost.
