    Another pixel fix thread

I have a high cluster on my new-to-me 530i. Typical missing pixels make the OBD LCD unreadable...

I've watched many videos, and have read many threads so I'd like to clarify a few things with you guys.

    - What is the best kit to buy? Solo ribbon cable vs. ribbon cable w/ LCD?
    - I'd like to avoid drilling. What are the tools needed to safely remove the cluster needles?
    - What else should I replace while I have the cluster out / open?

Let me know what you guys think.

Talk to Paul (blacknight and I don't remember the numbers part of his name) in the E38 forum. He's the resident pixel guy....He may even follow this forum as well.

    Thanks, it's blackknight530i btw .

My main thing is offering to do premium upgrades for clusters. It's ideal for people that plan to keep their car for a long time and don't want to deal with pixel failures again. The older clusters with the glued on ribbon cables had a flawed design that BMW finally fixed starting in late 2003 by using a connector on the circuit board instead of gluing the ribbon. I am able to mileage correct and code these to be plug and play to your car and they won't have pixels fail again. The older designs, even when repaired would eventually fail again after many heat cycles.

I don't do what I call a basic repair anymore as it just isn't worth it for me. If you only plan to keep the car for a year or two, I recommend some of the other shops to do it, but if you want to keep it for years, send me a message.

Hey Paul, I prefer to tackle this as a DIY, but just wanted some clarification on best ways to approach it from your perspective.
