Got a 2009 X5 that is making whining/grinding noise when accelerating. The sound is noticeable when driving 5-10 mph in the parking lot. Seem like the sound is coming from the engine area. You'll hear it loud and clear when the windows are all close and radio turn off. Don't really notice the sound once the car is pass 40 mph. Maybe because of high speed, traffic and wind. You can hear the sound a little bit with the windows down when accelerating out from a stop sign/light. When in park, you can hear the sound when pressing on the accelerator. Don't hear the sound when stop at stop sign/light. Only hear the sound when accelerating. Been going on for a week now and can't figure out where the sound is coming from. Will take it to Dealer later this week but want to prepare myself. Maybe its a easy DIY job, that way I don't have to pay the Diagnostic Free at dealer.

You might consider turning the A/C on or off and see if that's it. Mine has a whining sound when the compressor is engaged.
Thanks for the suggestion. I try turning on and off the AC and it wasn't that. I can still hear the whining/grinding noise when driving. Like I said, it only happen when I step on the gas pedal to accelerate. And the whining/grinding sound stop once the car speed is below 5mph and coming to a stop. So, maybe drivetrain related?
