Exclamation Rod Bearing Part Number Check KS/Glyco/BMW

I am going to be replacing the rod bearings on my 125k mile 98 M3 track car and have some confusion about bearing PNs.

BMW bearings which are super expensive have the following part numbers:
    - Blue, top shell: 11241284850
    - Red, bottom shell: 11241284849

It seems however that many people use Kolbenschmidt bearings (OE supplier) with success. But...:
    - ONLY part number I can find: 11241284849

    Similar scenario for Glyco:
    - ONLY part number I can find: 11241284850

What gives with the KS and Glyco part numbers? Do they use the same bearing shell top and bottom?

Concrete experience from folks who have used KS or Glyco would be appreciated. Thanks

I used Glyco rod bearings on both my daily and my track car. They are standard halves without top and bottom differentiation. I did check bearing clearances, and they were all within the range. If I remember correctly, you do not have to worry about top and bottom shells with the aftermarket bearings. I cannot remember the reasoning behind it though.

what he said. I use the KS bearings, or the ACL race bearings.

So basically hardware wise, (2) sets of this: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-kolbensc...1241284849~ks/ and I am covered for bearings?

You just need one set of bearings (12 halves). New rod bolts are a must.

Oh, I didn't see that was for all 12!

    Yes of course new bolts.

Found wear on some upper shells. It was autocrossed on Hoosiers before my ownership and has been my track car for a few years now. And we all know how well S52s control oil. I have an oil pressure gauge on my car. Not fun to look at that gauge on track.

You done any oil pan work like baffles or the S54 pan and dual pickups? If not, seems like a good time.

Put a baffle in last year. Useless piece of metal IMO. May help with cornering, but no help with oil control under braking. And most corners are after braking anyway!

I actually had pulled the pan to try a mod to the suction tube to get it closer to the pan floor and that's when I decided to look at the bearings.

    S54 is so damn expensive.

Yeah I feel the same way about baffles from everything I've seen. I'm pondering going the S54 pan route when I decide to address my very slowly leaking oil pan gasket in the next year or two. And of course the stupid oil pump nut.

The BW kit is indeed stupid expensive, but I'm sure a used pan could be sourced (with some considerable effort) and would greatly reduce the cost. The other ancillary accessories needed for the install can be bought new on their own.

Other than checking clearances before final install, keeping everything lubed and clean, and torquing it correctly, anything I should be aware of? Do the little tangs on the shell adequately index the bearing flush with the split surface of the cap/rod?

Do you have pictures of your old bearings to share. I would like to see the wear. There is a big debate on wear over on the E90M3 forum at M3post. Many of us, including me, have replaced our S65 rod bearings due to wear concerns.

You will get a feel for installing them as you them. It is not rocket science. Patience and care are the most important skills required. The tabs properly locate the shell.

I'll send a pic of them laid out once I get them all out of the engine. Of the four rods I've examined thus far, some of the bearings hardly look like they have been in a running engine, while a couple uppers have wear through the babbitt layer. In a small area.

It's a fairly straightforward job. I went through an unreasonable amount of isopropanol, Kimwipes, and nitrile gloves when I did my rod bearings a few months back. Have plenty of each on hand. Also, I left the subframe attached to the control arms, which made cylinder 2 a bit tricky to get to. I had a friend verify the torque angle as I wasn't able to line up my vision square to the gauge. FWIW I used a Lisle torque angle gauge, and it's complete garbage.

Here are my spent bearings, cylinders 1-6 respectively. Symptoms were low oil pressure at hot idle (oil light flicker).

Oh my god those things are torched! That was an S52??

I'll be using an angle indicator with the rod as opposed to a clamp like the Lisle. I also have the subframe still attached but it is hanging very low on some threaded rod. Shouldn't pose a problem.

No copper is visible, but there is a lot of pitting. The cap bearing on cylinder 4 is the worst of the lot, it's quite worn. Blackstone reported twice the universal average for copper.

    Haha yeah, S52 at 177k.

Threaded rod sounds interesting, mind posting a pic?

Oh, those looked ALL copper in those pics!

Here is my threaded rod setup. Keeps stress off control arm ball joints.

Allthread saving the day again! Always fun to see what you can do with a bit of that stuff and some thinking. I had to make a contraption that went through the holes in the control arm to get the bushing pressed on last time I did a set...

In the midst of putting the new bearings in. Plastigauge tells me they are all about 0.0018 clearance. Hair tighter than the 0.002 segment on the gauge. Sounds good to me.

It turns out that a few of these are gonna be a pitfa to angle torque with a breaker breaker bar under the car. Since Hans decided to make these things Torx not hex head, any bit of angle off dead-nuts perpendicular and the E12 will slip off. Encountered that a few times and had to put new bolts in and try again because I didn't know if they had stretched past yield etc.

Question is this: if I am using the angle torque gauge, can I use a ratchet to get me there? It will allow for less out of position torquing since I can keep it in a good range for pulling. Something like 30*, click it on back, and then the remaining 40*? The angle torque gauge won't move so I'll still be reading total angle.

    Thanks!

Here are pics of the bearings lined up. Not bad overall. A few uppers took some hammering over the years it seems.

Hopefully I installed the new ones correctly! They were clean, lubed, and torqued properly so fingers crossed. Also looked at the innards of the oil pump. Seemed in good condition so replaced an o-ring in there and slapped it back together.

Buttoning stuff back up over the next few days along with an additional oil pan baffle mod that seeks to improve oil slosh under braking. Pics of that to come.

Finally got back to buttoning everything back up.

Yanked the plugs and cranked the engine till I saw oil pressure.

Started it and ran for like five or ten minutes in the garage. Revved it a bit. Oil pressure is where I expect to see it and nothing sounds weird. Need to throw a couple more front end pieces on before driving it around.

At what point can I definitively say that I didn't fuck up the install?
