Diagnostic software/scanners etc. - BMW newbie

Just about to buy my first BMW (2002 M3) and I plan on doing my own maintenance where possible. I'm looking for some advice on what to use for diagnostics. There seems to be a lot of different things out there, from cheap scanners to Android apps, and then there's something called INPA. What would you recommend? Is INPA the actual BMW dealership software? I see lots of youtube videos about how to install and use it but nothing about what it is or where it comes from. Thanks!

Thanks, that was very useful. So it seems INPA is the factory diagnostic software, and the dealerships use something called DIS. It seems most people end up getting multiple solutions to get complete coverage.
