Hi,
Got a e53 a few weeks ago and been running very nicely. It's a 2002 e53 X5, with the 3.0l petrol engine (211km). Engine is M54.
The previous owner said they hadn't done an oil change in a while. So I thought I'd do it myself as my first "mechanic" task.
I look through a few guides, and followed them pretty much precisely.
-----The result-----
* When it starts, it idles' fine for ~1 minute (at around 950rpm).
* Then the RPM drops to 900, and it makes the car shutter/shake/putter
* When I rev the engine, the idle gets even rougher (can drop to around 600rpm/fluctuates lower- and even stalled).
* I can smell a bit of oil after 3 minutes
* Disconnecting the MAF made it idle much smoother.
----What I found-----
Some Oil has leaked out of the non-oil drain flap.
Here is a photo of my MAF area:
* I noticed a broken rubber o-ring, and the thread of the MAF connector is worn.
* The MAF seems clean
---- Questions------
* Is the MAF so sensitive that the broken o-ring and bad thread could have caused it?
* Should I disconnect the DISA to see if that helps?
* Can anyone recommend an expert in the Sydney area for this car?
I'm felling very disheartened that my first mechanic job has ruined my perfectly working car
Appreciate any advice here

Are you getting any codes? It sounds like a small vacuum leak.
The broken o-ring could or couldn't be the cause but I would make sure I run a smoke test and look for leaks.
Also since the last thing you did before this started was an oil change, I would make sure the oil cap is set correctly and tight, and the seal in it is present and in good condition.

I unplugged the MAF sensor, and `I get a Prog Failsafe` error code on the dash.
The idle is completely smooth without the MAF.
I went for a short (2km) drive to test.
However, when it changes gears (it's Auto), it seems to "jump" when changing gears.
Is this to be expected- can someone confirm that the MAF regulates the Auto trans shift points?
Does this confirm that my MAF is the culprit?
