So the door check straps in my E34 have been getting louder and louder, also getting much harder to open the doors. I remembered reading a thread where E39 door check straps would fit. Took a bit of searching, but I found it again.

So, while and the local P-N-P I grabbed a E39 rear check strap and an E34 front check strap.
I needed on for my left rear door the worst. Once I removed the E34 strap from my door, I installed the E39 strap. It bolts right in and door works super smooth. However, the E39 strap is a bit longer which allows the E34 rear door to open much further. I would now open far enough to hit the front door.
For todays repair, I ended up using the arm from my E34 strap and the bracket/rollers from the E34 that I just purchased. Works great again, but I don't think that it will last very long since one of the rollers can't really be greased properly.
I really want to find some E39 style straps that will fit properly on the E34 rear doors. I am pretty sure that the E39 strap will work on the E34 front doors perfectly. Again though, the dorr is going to open a little further, but no as much as the rear door did.
Here is a picture showing the three different length straps.
I don't know the lenght of a E39 front strap yet. Anybody have one laying around?
Maybe something from a 3 series might be shorter like needed for the rear?
I'm pretty sure I swapped an e39 into my e34. I'll have to wait for my son to get home and see which door.
I have an E39 parts car and would be happy to sell you the door checks.
PM if interested.
BTW no worry about the door opening further, it won't hit anything.

I replaced the right rear. Works like normal- just much much smoother.
