I have been making some good progress between summer fun and work. It's starting to actually look more like a car. I think most of my time has been spend cutting and fitting things and coming up with ways to fit everything happily. Hopefully all this effort will keep me from having to rework things later.

Part of the the downpipe heat shield done. Still need something for the cool packs.

Turbo drain after a bit of drama trying to drill the s54 pan for 1/2" NPT. Lesson learned there. Had a friend weld a plate over the botched hole. Glad they put more then one plug on these. Ended up drilling and tapping the block. Much easier.

A little trimming and I got a 14" puller to fit behind the radiator. I also have a 16" puller behind the intercooler.

I don't have any close up pictures of the intercooler fitting. It was a pita to fit the 4" core that came with my turbo parts. Really glad that I took the time to make it fit.
I am starting to think that I need to get a tune for this setup and. It try rajicase's old tune. The main issue I see is that the tune is for 93 octane and I can only seem to find 92 octane locally. I also need a maf and get a maf and tune together seems like the best way to go. Any suggestions?
I was skeptical about doing it but my roommate convinced me to powder coat it. It chips easy around the edges but I'm really happy with it.
It's been 4 days since I emailed trm to see about getting a tune with no response. I was hoping for a little better response time then that. I figured they would be the cheapest tuning option since I wouldn't need to buy a whole kit. I'm going to look at some other options as I feel like the first start isn't far off.
Long wait times are common with most BMW tuners.

I think I'm just getting impatient because I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm also guessing that being obd1 it'll take even longer to get a chip in the mail. I'll try giving them a call in the morning to see if I can speed things up.
That's odd trm always responded to me very quickly. Shoot them another email maybe

You did . Can't wait to get this thing on the road!
My maf and tune came in the mail today. I got the maf installed and was ready to do a boost leak test. I managed to find a air filter cap on my vacuum pump that fits perfectly inside a 3" coupler. Backed the air compressor down to 10psi and connected the air line. Well it wasn't silent. Air was pouring out. Or that's what it sounded like. Air coming from around the 90* into the throttle body and maf. Figured I didn't install the maf right and pulled it out to inspect. Looked fine so I carefully reinstalled it.
Second test and nothing had changed. Started spraying everything down and got an instantly could tell the maf wasn't the issue. More spraying of the cold side revealed many more pin holes. I was at a bit of a loss. I figured there would be a few leaky coupler but not leaky welds.
Removed the leaky section of pipe and started filling in the pin holes with jb weld. I'm interested to see it it will work or not. Maybe just a roll of rescue tape haha.
Kept the progress going and grounded my coil packs and put some oil in the engine.

So so far I don't regret going top mount but I'm not sure I'd do it again. I have spent a ton of time on just getting things to just fit right and look decent. Starting to be happy with how it's turning out.

I got quoted $1024 to make an adapter pipe from my 3.5" down pipe to 3" exhaust.
IMG_0759.jpg
I was was a bit shocked. I figured maybe $500. So looks like I'll have to find someone else to get that made before I can drive this thing. Or just buy a welder and figure out how to make one myself.
Should have it ready minus the exhaust to drive by the end of the weekend including a diff swap a bunch of wiring and roll bar install.
What ... the... f????
You can get an entire 3.5" exhaust fabbed around here for $500-750.....
I must not know the right people here. I guess it was a shop that mostly does Subarus so maybe since I have a BMW they added some tax haha

From what I briefly looked up partswise in stainless with the correct flanges it's like $200 in parts. They said it would take a whole days labor to build. They also said most of the cost was due to parts but didn't give specific costs.
I really just need to learn how to weld myself.
$200 seems steep but okay.
I could build that in a couple hours lol. A day is insane. I built my entire 3.5 mandrel bent exhaust in a day. An experienced shop could knock that out in an hour or two.

Prices on building an exhaust can vary greatly. There are $20 cheap eBay Vband flanges, then there are $80 vibrant flanges. Also, mig welding a downpipe using mild steel is way faster and cheaper then Tig welding and back purging properly. Totally apples to oranges in quality.

$1050 for a 16" piece of pipe is ridiculous even with SS , tig, and a proper back purge, unless the flanges are bedazzled with diamonds and the pipe is made out if plutonium.
Who runs a 16" down pipe ? All of mine have gone to about the transmission brace.
