Wow that's cheap. There's not really a pull apart close to me and usually people have already pulled the engines. I'm going to clean up my spare head and closely check it to see if it's worth taking in.

For a machined one? I would have actually done that. I bought one last night. I really don't have time to take trips to the machine shop. I've been working 6 days a week and I really want to make some progress with my one day off.

Bought an m50 head awhile back. Was completely rebuilt for $500.00. Had zero issues with it.

Always good to get a newly purchased head checked before you install. Will give you piece of mind... never know

Okay I don't feel as bad about buying one now. The seller had good reviews about the rebuilt heads so I pulled the trigger. Time to get this projected back on track.

I just got done working 9 days straight and 102 hours. One of the my companies new charter boats blew up a transmission (clutches stuck in forward) on the first seatrail last Friday evening. I pulled the gear on Saturday found a used replacement that would "bolt up" and had it to the shop Saturday night. Sunday we lifted the blown gear out of the boat after a few sketchy moves by hand to get it up 4 stairs. We lifted it out with a davit from another boat. Monday the new gear was moved onto the boat. We managed to get it to the back of the engine after reining the flywheel adapter plate. Slid it onto the engine and both rear mounts were off by 2" and one was 1/2" inboard of the stringer. Tuesday we had a spacer made to move the mounting bracket outboard a 1/2". Found 1/2" longer bolts to get the spacer and mounting plate bolted up. Drilled and tapped new mount holes in the stringers. Bolted the trans back up. Now it came time to lower the 2600lb engine and 600lb transmission down to the stringers. That was a bit nerve wracking as it was lashed up and the chain falls were maxed out in the up position with tension still on the lashing. Made it down fine. Had a different company do an alightment while I took a break. Once they were done I reinstalled the charge pipe, intake filter, trans cooler and new lines, trans oil pump, filled oil, adjusted shift cable. All of that was done in one hour. Went out at 6:30 last night for the second seatrial and the engine with the new trans wouldn't go over 1500rpm. Brought it back in. This morning I started it up high idle reached 2300rpm. Removed the primary fuel filter and found it full of alge and colapsed. New filters in both engines and flushed the lines. Third seatrail at 11am this morning. The boat reached 2350 rpm 95% load and did 23knts. It's a 52' Grand Banks. The fuel burn combined was 70gals per hour. Brought it in and pulled the coolers apart as it was running a few 5-10* hotter then I wanted. Tons of biuld up. Cleaned one engine and reassembled. Flushed both fuel filters and replaced again. Passed off the rest of the work and will be taking a 4 day weekend.

Should have my new head tomorrow. I hope to start reassembling the engine on Friday after a bit of rest.

Update: After a month of working a ton and boating to Alaska I've have got my motivation back. Parts are starting to trickle in. The turbo has shipped and I hope to see it before the weekend.

I finished putting the head/gasket/spacer on. Got the cams in and timed. Wrapped the turbo manifold and have started gathering the parts and tools to hog out the oil drain to 1/2" npt.

Not as pretty as I had thought it would look but it could also be worse. Needs a few more clamps too. Not a bad product for less then $20 though.

I have had good luck with no name cheap heat wrap.

However if you need a turbo blanket do not cheap out. I got a buddy with a single turbo 335 and he got a knock off blanket and it caught fire. Could have been really bad...

    The amazon reviews looked promising.

Woah I don't want that to happen. Thanks for the tip.

It's got twin cat 3196's and twin disc mg5111's. The new owner bought the boat from the east coast and had it shipped out to Washington so he really had only seen pictures of it. I have a feeling it sat for awhile right before he bought it. That and some odd service records from right before it was shipped made it no surprise when things went wrong. It's a solid boat now though

My turbo showed up last night. I couldn't wait to see what it was going to look like sitting on my engine so I did a test fit.

I attempted to put the down pipe on as well and found that the turbo outlet has a different v-band. I ordered the correct one. Now I just need to find someone to modify the downpipe.

I'll be interested to see how my setup compares to others with the same turbo.

I also have a m50b30 Vanos with M54b30 internals ,with S50 head, we nearly have Similar setups ( except Aluminum intake and V8 3.5" throttle body )

I used MLS 0.140 ,the Cr is nearly 8.5 ,I got 380-400 whp on 13 psi on holset HXsuper 40/35 exh 12 (similar to 60/60), running 95 oct which i think is similar to 92-93 usa
Its too damn scary in an e30 :-), the boost hits hard ,really hard , although I have longer gears than most of you guys (getrag 260+ 3.25 lsd ) but I go fast through gears, and its still scary every time I get to drive it :-)

inspite all that ,I pulled the trigger for a 6764 turbo and I would try to reach the 600 whp goal with 95 + WM ( Greed kills :-))

I think for what I am trying to do this turbo will be perfect. I really don't want over 500hp and I know my engine won't take that. I also won't be going for mac power right away. I know eventually I will want to upgrade and build another motor.

13psi and 400whp would be awesome! At that level i would hope to avoid major failures. I do however expect the trans to explode on me.

Hoping to have the new flange welded on next weekend. I'll be getting the drain with vent in and feed line this week. Slow and steady progress. I have to get out and enjoy this nice weather while I have it.

    At 13.8 psi my s52 made 463whp from a s256.

Made a couple more lines. The ptfe 4an line didn't seem to get tight in the fittings I bought so I ordered some different line. I continued on the 10an drain/vent lines but forgot to order a few fittings when I bought the y fitting. I should probably stop ordering parts while drinking. It does make it easier to hit buy now however.

Hoping this setup will ensure no smoking issues. I clocked the turbo as far as far upright as I could before the drain line starts to hit the manifold

That's going to the Y block that's connected to the turbo drain then to a 1/2npt to 10an fitting in the drain plug hole. The hose coming off the vanos isn't cut yet. I really don't want to run a scavenge pump. Hoping this will work well since I probably have scavenge pump money into the fittings haha. Also hogged out the valve cover vent hole and have a 1" hose to dump to the ground.

You'll probably be fine, my turbo is clocked more than anyone said was okay and it's not ideal flow to the pan but never smokes or anything like that at all. BW turbos like it rough baby.
