BMW Mushroom Wood Tungsten Weighted Shift Knob - Hand crafted - Made in the USA - SOLD

BMW Mushroom Wood Tungsten Weighted Shift Knob - Hand crafted - Made in the USA

100% hand turned, Made in the USA, BMW Mushroom Wood Shift knobs, weighted with Tungsten; a material 1.7 times heavier than lead, and come fitted with an OEM push down internal clip that retains the shift knob to your shift lever.

An original Mushroom knob was used as a reference point to create these; the aim was to make it substantially better then the original in every way.

Step 1: Weight: One of the most common upgrades in the BMW world is moving to a weighted shift knob like a ZHP knob or other performance knob. The added weight provides a much smoother shifting experience. The ZHP weighs in at 5.2oz; our Cocobolo Mushroom shift knob weighs in at 5.7oz, and Black Ironwood Mushroom weighs in at 6.2oz!

Step 2: Shift knob retention: Most non-OEM shift knobs do not have the OEM style clip on retention insert, and resort to either a set screw, compression rubber, or other inferior mounting methods. This is because the retention inserts are not sold separately, but we have found a way to source them!

Step 3: Wood type: The OEM shift knobs were made from normal base stock wood of the time; rather unremarkable in grain beauty or density. Currently I am offering three options, Walnut, Cocobolo and Black Ironwood.

Cocobolo: a tropical rosewood from central america that is both beautiful and dense. The grain is rich and the wood is dense enough to sink in water.

Black Ironwood: We have a limited supply and once gone, it is gone. This tree is the #1 heaviest wood in the world, and almost never comes up forsale. It grows in a very limited area in southern florida, and a bit of the Caribbean. The wood has naturally evolved to withstand hurricanes in the region by becoming extremely dense. It is an extremely small tree with extremely slow growth. Getting this wood at all let alone in a large enough size to make into something the size of a shift knob was a challenge, but we have been able to source a limited supply of Black Ironwood from a wood supplier that purchased their supply from the Florida government after they had cleared land for Highways and bridges nearly 40 years ago. Not to be mistaken with Desert Ironwood, any other type of ironwood or the African Black ironwood that are all of unrelated genus.

For the price conscientious, we also offer the shift knob in domestic walnut, and although not as rare or dense as the above woods, has been long prized for its beauty.

We offer each shift knob in three different finishes:

Natural Oil and Wax - least durable, and will need to be reapplied/cared for over time. This finish does however provide for the most direct feel between your hand and the wood, and will build the most unique patina over time. The finish brings out the color of the wood and grain, while providing a satin non-gloss finish.

Shellac and Wax - provides for a middle ground approach between durability, beauty and gloss. Shellac is a natural resin made by the lac bug, it does a great job of sealing in natural wood oils and when applied brings our grain beauty while giving a tasteful amount of gloss.

Shellac sealer and urethane top coat - The shellac seals natural oils in while the Urethane provides the ultimate wear protection. This finish is available in a satin and a middle ground gloss urethane top coat.

Each of these knobs is hand turned, bored, counter bored, fitted and finished for nearly 3 hours. Every individual internal component has been meticulously sourced and selected, and each knob is made completely to order.

This is one of those knobs you can take with you from one BMW to the next, hell, maybe even put it in your will.

Allow up to 4 weeks to receive tracking information. Likely faster, but not at the expense of quality.

Each piece comes from its own unique wood stock, and thus can vary slightly in color, weight, grain and may even have slight wood checks which do not affect functionality.

Walnut with any finish - $200
Cocobolo with any finish - $250
Black Ironwood with any finish - $375
