    Best cheap facelift alternator source?

Have to replace an alternator for a friend.
I thought people had mentioned around here that the auto parts stores had good and cheap ones, but I took a look and they are not cheap (all are $400, except one aftermarket for $280).

What is a good place to get a Bosch or high quality one online for cheap?

I thought facelift alternators were watercooled? How are you guys getting prices that low? The BMW one 12317508286 (which is probably reman anyways) lists for $900+. I now need a new alt for my 2000 750iL (pulley seized up while driving, snapped the belt).

Gocha. When PSJR created the thread, I knew he had some M73s, so I assumed that’s what the thread was about. Disregard (unless someone wants to jump in and provide sources for good alt options for the M73TU for the V12).

    Hey serious7series,
I was working on an M62TU for a friend in this thread, but the alt is the same for the M73N - the only difference is pulley size. If you get a replacement alt, you will want to check that the pulley is the same size or swap your old one on. You are right that the BMW part is just a Bosch reman, which goes for about $400 from most aftermarket outlets. As XAlt mentioned, there are a variety of third-party rebuilds in the $200-250 range.

As an update to this thread, what I did end up doing for my friend's car, which only had a bad regulator, is the $85 eBay rebuild kit, which worked great and wasn't too difficult. There was one screw that was way too tight and stripped - had to drill off the head then get the rest with vise grips. I guess that is a common thing as the rebuild kit came with a replacement for that one screw and not for any others. There are 2 bearings, front and rear - doing the rear bearing needs some sort of bearing extraction and press tools, so I skipped it as it wasn't bad. The new front bearing was fine to press in with a wood block and hammer.

Depending on what is wrong with his current one; I would consider rebuilding it. There are kits on eBay for about $85 and I've had good success with mine I did using that kit about 2 years and 35k miles ago.
